Processes --how many? safe to disable

OK how my processes are running on your machine? I have 35, it went up 2 from 7100 to 7127 and not sure why.

I was also wondering what people think are safe services to disable or set to manual. I do the basics and keep no software auto start with windows. When I was using XP I consulted blackvipers web site and a little to medicated currently to really do more then this post.

I have 67 running.

I tend to leave programs I use a lot (Word, Photoshop, uTorrent, etc.) idle in the background. That way I can access them instantly and they don't use up much memory or cpu.

It's sitting in RAM. If you got it, burn it. That's what it's for.

65 processes. 61 services. I think blackviper is about services. I did that in Vista. Found out through trial and error that ending some services actually slows things down not speed them up. And that's if you don't stop something you need. If you go messing with services, then I suggest doing them one at a time and running things a bit in between.

i have around 57 processes running idle. But i dont mind because performance is already top notch, i dont see the point in stopping a few processes, u probably wouldnt notice any difference.

47-49 processes.

I've worked the services in XP in great detail and eliminated many of them.

In Vista I started watching what was eating what up (CPU, RAM, hard drive) and trimmed them accordingly. Those that didn't take a bunch of resources were left alone.

With Win7 I'm still experimenting. I hate the Indexing Service - so that's the first to go. Beyond that it's still just determining what's eating your resources and then figuring out if you can live without it.

Everyone's computer usage is different, so what works for me won't work for you. For example, I don't do Faxing from my systems so I disable it. Others may want to Fax, so they can set it to Auto (if they expect to use it) or Manual as a "just in case" measure.

I currently have 45 processes running on idle but I have disabled the ones I dont need eg search. spooler, media sharing ,defender etc. It all depends on what your use of the computer is for. I find the ones I have disabled help by not running in the back ground so power can be sent elsewhere when needed, like gaming

I am running with Win 7 Build 7127 under 31 processes, I trust blackviper for years with my old build XP, Vista and now Win 7.

I haven't install freeware anti-virus program just yet.

Always keep low processess as much you can and run games will go smooth without interface from other apps running in background and sluggish frame rates depends on games you are running with.

Why some ppl let anti-virus apps running in background while play games ?

Your system runs fast if it's got a lot of resources that it can use. It slows down when the system tries to use more resources than what's available.

So, for example, if you use up all your RAM with antivirus scanning - then your RAM usage in the game will be affected.

The problem here is that there are many "resources" in your computer and you can't always know what's consuming what resource. The most common resources are CPU, RAM, hard drive access, and video - but there's plenty more that will affect your system's speed.

I routinely run my anti-virus, have IE open with 8 tabs, and 2 instances of Firefox open with 10 and 22 tabs while I game. But I've got a boatload of RAM, so the performance hit is minimal.

I just tweak services and start-ups down to 25 Processes and feel snappy, good for gaming and quick boot-time.

I do chats IM, watch videos, emails, firefox many tabs, work on videos edits stuff. (30-45 processes) when not gaming.

sounds like most of you are on desktops, with all that stuff open on a laptop your battery would be gone in short order. I have become a laptop user in the past few years and trimming things down is always best and Seven allows me to have the great GUI and not change battery life.

My last desktop could handle all the Apps, I think when I had my last gaming rig it had about 60 processes running at all times.

Yeah I ran into battery life problems too with my laptop. Although, I never take my laptop anywhere for the most part, so when I'm at my desk I just take out the battery and leave it plugged up all the gaming and whatnot I want with no chance of a dead battery
