If what you want to do is lock your IE homepage so it cannot be changed by programs, then you create the Registry key below, create a DWORD value called "Homepage" and a value of 1.

This will disable the homepage options on the Internet Options of Control Panel.
It also denies permission to webpages that attempt to change the homepage.

"Homepage"= 0x0000000000 (1)

Malware can use these entries to lock in a malicious home page.
Also, programs like Symantec can do this. So can Comcast, and some application installers will try to set the home page to their company's website.


To re-enable the homepage options on the Internet Options of Control Panel, set the Homepage value to 0.

Check Internet Options in Control Panel. Is the Home Page OK there?

Guys, i don't know about this stuff and would like you to tell me what to do. I would like it to be set to whats safe and leave it. I like chrome but seem to have this Hijack thing in the IE stuff. What is your recommendation?



I could care less what homepage i have as long as it's safe.

Do you have an external USB drive connected to the computer?

The only things that are being utilized on my computer are a corded mouse which uses one usb slot, a printer that uses another and a laptop cooling pad plug in that uses one 3.0 slot.

No, no usb connection or slot for the printer. It just plugs into a 2.0 usb port.


The only thing that i use a SD card for is to transfer camera pics and that slot is in the very front of the laptop.

I believe we went ahead and did that yesterday .

That could be his printer . That plugs into this USB 2.0 port

Yes, i reformat on a pretty regular basis since i don't have anything important and don't need many programs. Whenever i seem to run into malware and it gets a foothold i prefer to just reformat and start over.

Reformatting is much quicker than doing a system restore for me. I never need to save anything since i don't have anything.

I just change the boot to boot off the dvd and then install Win 7 off an iso disk. I have all my drivers on a usb thumb drive.

If dont have the Windows 7 installation DVD you could Download it from Step 1's link in the tutorial and use the Product key underneath your laptop to activate it .

You don't want to use the Factory Recovery disc cause that will install the OEM bloatware .

I have followed all those steps and i keep running into the same problem which we have been working on, thus my reason for asking for help.

Ok, after i reformat and i'm done installing Windows fresh off of the ISO disk i then pop in my thumb drive and get the below screen.

I usually just install the drivers that gets me online where i quickly try to update windows and install an AV at the same time.

What happens is IE 8 pops up, and asks me questions about accelerators etc... and this is where i get confused and might be doing it wrong.

IE 8 is not what i use, i seem to not know how to get IE 10 or maybe don't know when to add it. I also don't know if i should be installing the updates first (which are over 100) or AV first. Windows Firewall is always working correctly.

The other thing that confuses me is when you click on say audio or usb etc.. it shows all types of files, which ones do i need to worry about, just the application exe file or others as well.

Maybe i should burn a new iso image but i'm worried my computer might not be clean , i have no access to a known clean computer but i do have two disks that i know are clean.

One disk is windows with the service pack 1 (which i have always used) and one disk is just windows 7 without the service pack 1 , maybe i should try to install the service pack 1 after i install regular windows because it seems the disk with the service pack 1 image has caused me an issue every time.
