Remember that we don't have the control of the computer . You do.

You can even make things worst using a recovery disk from another computer.

YEAH, I CANNOT DENY THAT SO FAR...HOWEVER, JUST TRYING TO DO SIMILAR WHEN MY SYSTEM SCREWED UP.

THEY WERE AS A RESULT OF USING "EASY RECOVERY ESSENTIALS PROGRAM" IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY.

YES, I AM AWARE OF THAT - NO ARGUMENT THERE.HARD ENOUGH TO VIEW MONITORS WITH KEYBOARDS BALANCED TO TYPE EACH AND EVERY STEP.

GOTTA LOCATE IT...CURRENTLY RUNNING A DELL (HIS COMPUTER IS ALSO A DELL DESKTOP) DIAGNOSTICS DISC AND WAITING FOR IT TO END....AT LEAST I WAS ABLE TO "EXPLORE HIS FILES ON HIS HD...I DID FIND A RESTORE POINT HOWEVER, IS IS DATED FEBRUARY4TH OR THERE ABOUT....HIS COMPUTER DIDN'T CRAP-OUT UNTIL 3RD(?) WEEK OF FEBRUARY.

Having difficulties all the way around...

Using "Emergency Recovery Program ERD Program" have the "explorer" active in that program, and can see inside the Windows folder - System Volume Information to be exact (see pict)...Is there anything I can click on directly to restore the computer....

ALSO, is there a folder that contains full back-ups (for lack of a better phrase) of the registry that I may be able to do same?

On the disk you have a C:\found.000 folder. Can you see the date it was created?
The found.000 folder has lost clusters. It can explain why it isn't booting.

No. As previously posted, you could try shadowcopyview and if that can find the shadow, you can restore from it.

There might be backed up hives in windows\system32\config\regback

The registry will also be in the shadowcopy exactly as it was at the time the shadow copy was made.

That found folder is created by chkdsk attempting repairs.

Thanks for reply...I have shut down the program as I am burned out with this....May attack it again in the morning.

Then test the disk (chkdsk c: /f)

I think he already ran chkdsk. I don't know if it completed. Might be worth another try if not.

I think I already attempted this but, I am sooo damned burned out, I can't remember wtf i did 20 min ago...that is why I need to start over - again!

Ok - On here this morning and will continue shortly after I knock off a pot of coffee!

Booted into hard drive[/B] this morning and attempted to get into safe mode with command prompt and it is asking for a password to long in...I have eliminated the passwords to all accounts - see picts.

ok, will attempt this in a short while and thanks for the reply(ies),

I eliminated password and when booting up simply hit enter and had bad password error...Tried again with forum suggestion to type user name and no password and hit enter...Box appeared that said "password must be changed before logging on the first time"...

I typed in user name, new pass in the following 3 blank fields and it erred again...Then, typed in another password in I believe the other 2 fields and it stated that "your password has been changed"....

Received a system 32 error "username.dll error...I have a moveable cursor on a blank screen...

I hit ctrl-alt-del and have an error message: "The log-on process was unable to display security an long on options when ctrl-alt-del was pressed and told me to do a hard shut down via power button...

Did that and have typical starting windows swirling display followed by error message:
"logon UI.exe - Bad Image C:\windows\system32\RpcRtRemote.dll error".

Eventually goes to log-on screen asking for user name and pass...... Did that, have another typical error message and "says preparing your desktop"..

Somehow hit ctrl-alt-del and got me into task manager and initialized same...many services running and saw "Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service" running."

I have about 20 pict to be posted so, here they come BUT, still do not have a typical desktop display.;

If you can get installation media to him - worth him booting that and trying system restore first.

System Restore

A repair install can only be performed if you can boot into the os.

Otherwise, install from booted media without formatting the target moves the previous installation into a folder called windows.old. That can be accessed afterwards.

Or install onto a separate partition.

Question -

If I can do a log-in to sign on which I have done today, does that qualify as booting into the OS?....I have a Win7 disc as so, can a "repair" be done W/O DATA LOSS? I can still see no desktop icons but, have access to the desktop, etc using a 3rd party rescue disc.
