Reinstallation

I messed up in the partition. Meant to make a 10GB separate partition for me to dump things in and it made it the primary partition. How do I simply reinstall over the previous Windows 7? Can I? It's not letting me boot from the disk. I'd much rather do that then have to get a third party software and separate it out myself.

You can have more than one Primary partition. Are you saying you installed Windows 7 on the 10gb partition by mistake?

Go into Disk Management and post a screenshot of the drive map so we can advise you, using the Snipping Tool on the Start Menu, attaching file using Paper clip in reply box.

Chances are you can click on the partition and Extend it to the right. If there is something blocking that, then delete it so you can extend your Win7 partition as far as you want.

Otherwise, boot into the Win7 DVD, choose Custom install, Advanced Drive tools and delete all of the partitions, create partition(s) you want carefully this time, and make sure the partition you want to install Windows 7 is the one highlighted when you click Install.

This is going to sound retarded, but it's almost 5am so please bear with me. How do I boot from the DVD? Every time I try it simply starts normally.

When your PC first starts, press del, F2 etc, to enter the BIOS, you then need to change the boot order to CD/DVD - HDD - xxx - xxx

It's probably set up at the minute like;

HDD - CD/DVD - xxx - xxx

And the computer gods smiled up thee. It's working. No more half-drunken installations on new rigs. Never again. Now all I need to do is figure out how to get my case's power switch to start working properly.

The little plastic switch behind the power button will not bite you if you just stab it gently with your finger. Some people do it for years.
