Seagate external

Another thing i noticed is, when plugging in the faulty external it takes some minutes for the laptop to recognise.

In this same situation when i was using seatools for windows, if i plugged the faulty external in and hit the rescan button on seatools for windows, it would respond straight away but only show the c drive.
This is because the external was connected but was not recognised by the system and this usually takes some minutes to come up on the system.

So what i do now is, go to disk management and wait until i get a disk initialize prompt. This way i know the external has been recognised even tho it is unallocated. If this makes sense.

I would then try bootice once the prompt appears in scrnshot.

So far with the external connected, i ran bootice as admin it took a while for bootice to show up. This must be because the external is preventing it because it's faulty.

I was hoping bootice would show up but instead i see error messages.

Strangely after pressing ok, bootice appears. Strange?

When bootice appeared, it showed the external but all the buttons below were greyed out.

I then selected the c drive then selected faulty drive and the buttons below are no more greyed out as you can see.

But the next problem seems to be the not responding sign in the title bar.

So im hoping for bootice to recognise the drive without it saying not responding and freezing up.

This will take some time only with luck lol.

This is what it shows. If i make any changes it will freeze. So looks like it might be end of the bootice plan.

Not sure if these pictures are part of an error. I did not expect to see it show up as bootice kept freezing when trying to make changes so the drive can be recognised.

Notice you can only see the mbr only to.

Please do the following:

Shut down your computer and reboot. Allow Windows to load completely.

Plug in your faulty drive Seagate expansion and wait for Windows to recognize it.

Confirm that it shows in Windows Disk Management and then close Windows Disk management.

Now run bootice as administrator.

Select your expansion drive if it is not already showing up by default.

If all the buttons are functional - not greyed out - then hit on Process MBR. In the ensuing MBR Boot Record Window select Windows NT 5.x/6.x MBR and click on Install /Config button. This will write the MBR code on sector 0.

The following screenshots will help to understand. ( I don't have an external drive here. shows my SD card.)





If all the buttons are greyed out , repeat the process many times and check whether you are able to catch all buttons in functional state to carryout the further operations listed. If you get it in a functional state you are lucky.

Even after repeated attempts you are unable to get those functional buttons to carry out the writing of MBR, give up and we will go to Plan B.

EDIT: Never select the C: drive. A wrong operation can make your system inaccessible.

If after plan b nothing works, i am prepared with your help to see if we can wipe the drive clean and ready to re use. If that is ok.

I will do this now, I will give it a lot of attempts and maybe out out them all might get lucky once.

A tornado warning siren,moving towards our locality at 60mph I am closing down the system and going to the basement if the situation worsens.

Ok, at the moment keep getting 2 same different error messages and bootice keepts freezing.

I still keep getting "read file failed! dada error (cyclic redundancy check)" and all is greyed out.

Ok. Close bootice. We do not need it any more.

Try to initialize the drive in Windows Disk Management as an MBR disk.If it initializes stop with it and do not proceed further - do not create any new volume and do not format.

If it refuses to initialize throwing out an error message - any error message, then your only option is to take the HDD out, connect it as a secondary drive on your desktop and see whether you can access the drive.

It may or may not happen in your case. But take your last chance.

Ok yes i get read file failed error message when following the disk management instructions.

My laptop is the only system that recognises the faulty drive. You mentioned take the hdd out connect it on your desktop.
Should i connect it to desktop pc or just take the hdd out and try connecting it back to laptop?

The outside plastic case is quite tough so it might not be so easy to take it out whilst trying not to cause damage to the case as the same time. I won't be sending it to seagate so if you want me to open the case i dont mind.

If your drive is still under warranty, and if you intend RMAing it for replacement then do not break it. You will void the warranty.

Instead you may talk to Seagate Technical Support and check whether they can bail you out in recovering your drive - as they did as reported by DavidE - or want you return the drive for replacement.

I will pass on contacting seagate. I am prepared to format the drive and use it again for storage or take it out of it's case.

Jumanji I managed to save some of the important data when I was able to access it at very slow speeds. It says during the healthy RAW status. Some of the music I lost, one of my friend said he will send me over 500gb worth of the music so it is not to bad .

So we can take it out of it's case or format it somehow.
