second BSOD on laptop after reinstall

added a screencap of my settings for the minidumps, it was set up properly apart from the fact it forced restarted and the dumps were not set to 256k, plus the systemroot part was capitalised at the first S and the R.

and also one for my pagefile settings as requested. originally the top tick box was ticked to automatically manage the pagefile settings for all drives, however l set it to system managed.. first off this setting had not been touched before l re-installed back then l got the same Bsod which is why l re-installed.. plus the fact l like to refresh once a year, further Bsods happened after reinstalling which have been completely random but give me the same error.

lve virus scanned, run scandisk, done a sfc file check edited my settings for the pagefile to system managed rather than mess with the tick box. now sometimes it can be a week or two before l get a bsod and occasionally maybe once a day.. its just extremely strange and l cannot predict them or acquire minidumps because they fail to create which is annoying.

Alright, since everything appears to be setup correctly (I assume you turned off the automatic restart so you could see the crashes), I decided to go through everything you have posted so far with a fine tooth comb. I really suspect your hard drive at this time. Have you opened the system up to make sure the hard drive is fully inserted?

If you have not, this should be your first step. Even if it is fully inserted, remove it, blow any dust out of the contacts, and re-insert it. We will proceed from there.

When you remove the hard drive, follow these steps:
  1. Shut down and turn off the computer
  2. Remove the AC power and then remove the battery
  3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds (this closes the circuit so all components are drained of power)
  4. Open the panel where the hard disk is housed in the laptop
  5. Remove the panel
  6. Remove the hard disk (check if it is loose first as this may indicate why you are having trouble)
  7. Use a can of compressed air to blow the dust out of the connection both in the laptop and on the hard disk itself
  8. Replace the hard disk and make sure it snugly fits in the laptop
  9. Replace the panel to cover the hard disk
  10. Re-insert your battery and then plug in the AC Adapter
  11. Start up the computer and see how it responds

Try not to lose any screws in the process. Put any screws necessary for removal of the panel in a safe place and work on a table or desk if possible. Also, make sure you are grounded to Avoid Static Damage to Your PC. The hard disk itself should not need any screws removed to pull out of the system. It should just slide out, so the only screws involved should be on the panel on the outside of the laptop.

lve actually already done that recently after the first bsod as l did a spring clean around the time l reinstalled my OS.

l will note one thing l noticed, before l ran scan disk to see if it picked anything up (which l dont believe it did, as it didnt note anything) my icon for skype wouldnt show up at all on the task bar, however after running scan disk its shown up ever since. so lm slightly confused as to what fixed that issue however lm wondering what kind of tools are out there to test hard drives, would be interesting to see if there was a tool that would give me some kind of idea.

at present lve only ran the quick test as lm off to bed soon however l will run the extended one later on my drive, but initial results state that l have passed the quick test.

as for my scan disk logs, there were some irregularities on the first time l ran scan disk but the second one picked up nothing, lve pasted the log below. however as said above l will run a full test as soon as l get up later so l can give it a good several hours (if needed), regardless this laptop is just over a year and a few months old which means its out of warranty which is annoying because the webcam on it died just after.. but l have an external one l use so lm not overly bothered.. but lm assuming the drive may still be under warranty as they usually seem to have a couple of years on them lve found, same with ram although l didnt find an issue with it (equally l only ran memtest up to 120% which was for like an hour and a half immediately after a bsod).

This was the second run, correct?

I would recommend you run the disk check again. There were still some irregularities, as you put it. If you scroll through the code above, you can see where I highlighted the message letting you know that Windows made corrections to the file system. Run until you get the message Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.

this scandisk log was obtained from my first run of scan disk (6am) my second run was around (8am) going by what l remember from the logs earlier.

currently running the WDC drive tool extended test now, just curious what my next port of call would be should no problems be found, that way l can get onto the next test as soon as this one is finished.

would just like to update, that l have ran both the quick and extended tests of the "Western Digital Scorpio Blue Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool" which passed both tests so it would seem my hard drive doesnt have any issue, while l did run memtest l only ran it within windows and not the version that has a tutorial here.

lm currently running Memtest86+ via the USB method, and see what that brings because if there isnt problems with the drive that pretty much leaves RAM or OS issues, though l am wondering if it could be related to a windows update (stranger things have happened).

l'll update this thread once lve done at least 7 passes.. tho what l do see from memtest is that my system contains two diff modules one is a Kingston (2gig) and the other is a Hynix (1gig) my laptop only has 3gig ram which makes it about right.

Crashes may also be related to the file system errors that were found during disk check. See how the system responds now that those errors have been corrected. Let us know the results of Memtest86+, as well. If you have any errors, they could also be causing crashes. It is possible you had two causes: memory problems and hard disk file system errors.

l believe l have had one bsod since running scandisk.. however l will update this thread if l do have another.

with regards to memtest86+ lm still running the test, so far the member has had 4 passes (12% at this second through the 5th pass) and no errors whatsoever have been detected yet (touch wood), problem is from there where else would l look? as lm pretty sure that the original message was the exact same bsod whats weirder is on a fresh install the same issues happened again, scandisk did pick up some irregularities which were fixed and second scan found nothing, drives tested fine with WDs drive tools and my ram has the potential to be completely fine..

If everything checks out with your RAM, there are other possible hardware tests we can run. Also, now that you cleared up the system file corruption, the crashes may stop pointing to that as the cause and my root out the true cause.

indeed, the question would be after lve done several passes and find nothing.. what tests should l run? very nearly to my 6th pass so far no errors, so if it does happen again and lm unable to post a bsod (as my settings have been verified for both minidumps and pagefile settings).

granted the question would be how long it takes for another bsod to appear but how to record it brings up questions if l still get the exact same errors.

With automatically restart upon system failure disabled, does the system still restart after a crash, or can you view the blue screen and post the error given from it? Perhaps take a picture with a digital camera?

not sure l have a camera thats good enough to take a picture of the full screen "if" and "when" it does happen again, the best l maybe able to offer is copying the codes unless l can take a picture of the codes and they come out well enough to be seen on an image. will try.

Temps are
CPU: 29C
motherboard: 39/40C (guess the reason l cant see a GPU temp is because its integrated which would make sense being a laptop)
hard drive: 39/40C

couldnt get fulmark to run so unable to burn-in test.. kept on giving me an error about resolution settings and full screen mode when l tried to run any kind of test.

these are the results from the GPU memory test:
Code:
Changing video mode to 640x480x16...OK
[18/03/2012 05:35:39] Test started for "Primary Display Driver (Mobile Intel(R) 4

Series Express Chipset Family)"...
Trying 16bpp RGB:565 mode...OK
Trying 16bpp RGB:555 mode...NOT SUPPORTED (Code: 80004001)
Trying 16bpp BGR:565 mode...NOT SUPPORTED (Code: 80004001)
Trying 32bpp RGB:888 mode...OK
Trying 32bpp BGR:888 mode...NOT SUPPORTED (Code: 80004001)
[18/03/2012 05:37:36] Pass completed (0 errors found).

had primus running for quite a while now so far and temps under load are around 55/57c (tho l cant speak for any spikes while l was away) for the CPU motherboard supposedly says 62C according to speccy however my if my previous assumption is correct this would be partially attributed to the GPU being on-board other than that no real errors have been noted which l guess is a good thing.

How many passes of Memtest86+ did you run?

Also, would it be possible to get your RAM settings and configuration? Download and install CPU-Z and Upload screenshots of the CPU, Mainboard, Memory, and SPD tabs. In the SPD tab, upload an image of each slot.

We won't be able to change any RAM settings since OEM computers and laptops disable these features of the BIOS, but it may shed some light on possible conflicts.

Are you still having crashes?

Settings look good, but what is in slot #2, #3, and #4 of the SPD tab?

there is no #3/4 (obviously since this board only has two slots, not that lve cracked that part of the outer casing to see)

here is the screen cap.

as of yet l havent had any more bsods, however l am sure lve had one since scan disk, l did however monitor temps while l was on skype earlier vid chatting with the girlfriend.. there was no real notable pushing of the hardware and l through temps were pretty reasonable considering.

If you have another crash, post back. We'll see if further steps are needed. I now have some idea of why you may continue to get crashes, but if you do not get another crash, it probably was just the hard disk errors causing previous crashes.
