Sleep doesn't

Twice now I have put the machine to sleep, checked an hour or so later that it is indeed suspended, but found sometime later when I return that it is running. When I check the system log, I can't see what has caused the machine to resume - eg for last night I see a message in the system log at 23:01 "The system is entering sleep.", followed by a couple of messages about services entering the stopped state, and then at 03:00:

"The system has resumed from sleep.

Sleep Time: ‎2009‎-‎01‎-‎27T12:01:33.141601600Z
Wake Time: ‎2009‎-‎01‎-‎27T16:00:13.645507800Z

Wake Source: Unknown"

Hello Nick,

Do you have a wireless mouse/keyboard. I have had turning on my tele. wake the computer since I go a wireless mouse. Me turning the phone on while next to the comp.

Also could be from a network card. Go to device manager and then to the properties for these devices. Look for a 'Power Management' tab and deselect 'Allow this device to wake the computer' for as many as you can. See if that fixes it.

Try opening CMD with administrator rights and typing

powercfg lastwake {enter}

Does it show the same ? unknown wakeup source?

To answer the various suggestions:

Neither mouse nor keyboard are wireless.
Option to allow NIC to wake computer is unchecked and greyed out.
powercfg lastwake shows "Wake History Count - 0" - don't know if this count is only since the last full poweron, as the PC has been completely shutdown and restarted since the problem I reported.

This installation of Windows 7 was done as an upgrade from a Vista Business installation that could be put into standby without ever waking spontaneously.

I'm pretty sure that it is since the last shutdown.

No, that option to allow NIC to wake PC is already unchecked (I already indicated that in my previous message).

Have you tried going into advanced power option and disabling the USB selective suspend setting?

I ran powercfg lastwake. Ended up being my network card. Thank you for the help.

Well, I disabled "USB selective suspend setting" and also disabled "Allow wake timers" in advanced power settings, but the problem still persists. This time I put the machine into sleep at 22:05 last night and according to the system log it woke itself at 00:05 (rather than the 03:00 of the previous two times). I had previously suspected Windows Update as the cause, as that is set to check for updates at 03:00, but that couldn't cause a wake at 00:05. And as before, wake source is shown as unknown in the system log.

When I look through the list of all scheduled tasks that have run in the last 24 hours, none of them commenced at the wake time, so that doesn't seem to be causing the machine to wake.

I have a problem with the sleep mode, too.

This is weird. There is no problem to put my Win7 (Ultimate) into the sleep mode while I'm at home. However, if my computer is logged in into domain in my company, I cannot make it sleep.

When I press the sleep button - screen gets dark (that is normal), but the sound card still plays the music. The computer works (CPU), but I cannot recall the screen (it's turned off), keyboard also doesn't work (both - external and internal).

I tried to undock the notebook (I use docking station; both at home and at work), also disabling the WIFI card - with no luck.

This is strange, there are several Win7 (Professional) in my company, and they work fine.

Any ideas might be helpful

Btw. I've been using Win7 for about 3 months (since it was launched in MSDN). The problem with putting the notebook while I'm at work into the sleep mode has started to happen about 1 month ago.

I just noticed this post of yours. My desktop sleeps fine except every once in awhile it wakes for no apparent reason. I do have a wireless mouse/keyboard and now I'll have to pay attention to whether I've just turned on the TV, etc., if and when it wakes for no reason again.

I found this thread while searching for a solution to the problem also. I've followed all of the advice above without luck. My computer seems to wake itself at random times during the night or day. lastwake always reports unknown. I went through the trouble of double checking every singe task in

However, in my LAN network adapter settings, advanced tab, I scrolled to the bottom and saw "Wake on Magic Packet" and "Wake on Pattern match" were still enabled, despite "Allow this device to wake the computer" being unchecked in the Power management tab. I disabled them. I have a feeling this won't solve the problem, but I thought I'd keep the topic alive and post my thoughts.

I'll post back when I have results.

It sleeps!

I was finally able to get it to stop waking up. In Power Options-->Advanced Power Options-->Sleep I set "Allow Wake Timers" to Disable.

I would have preferred to figure out WHAT was waking it up, or having the ability to tell Windows to not wake from "Wake Source: Unknown" so I could have wake events at times I choose. But, I'll take what I can get, my computer sleeps through the night now.

Just to add another tidbit to what solved my problem: I went into my Intel Management Engine configuration at boot time (ctrl + p after POST I believe) and turned off all the functions that could wake up my computer. I didn't disable it completely because I've had problems after doing that before. So not sure if this'll help anyone, but thought it was worth contributing!

ProBook won't stay in sleep or hibernate mode

Recently my HP ProBook stopped staying in SLEEP or HIBERNATE mode. I went through everything, virus check, restore, blablabla.

Turns out the problem was an HP UPDATE. Specifically, the REALTEK ETHERNET CONTROLLER ALL IN ONE WINDOW DRIVE update sent to me by HP as a necessary addition to the function of my ProBook. IDK why but it screws with your sleep and hibernate modes. I also don't know if it affects any other operating system other than Windows 7. I'm using Windows 7.

Steps to take... go to add or remove programs - deinstall this update - restart your computer - and problem is solved.
