My boyfriend said the latest Windows Update installed automatically, and his computer was not able to properly boot after that. He ran the startup repair, which didn't solve any problems.

He followed a tutorial on here on how to repair your startup without a reinstall, which didn't work. He put the reinstallation disk in, and it always gets hung at "Windows is loading files...".

Can anyone help? What do we do?

It seems you able to start the built in repair module. ( I assume that's how he tried startup repair ).

If you can get to that - choose system restore to a point before the update.

Your WIn7 DVD should be able to boot regardless of whether Win7 will. Try booting it in another computer to see if it will boot. If not, confirm the ISO's integrity and burn another using ImgBurn at 4x speed with Verify.

You may need to burn a Repair CD if the built-in Repair doesn't help, possibly due to corrupt System Files. System Repair Disc - Create

Startup Repair should automate System Restore, but run it separately from the Options list anyway.

You can also copy out your files using the DVD/Repair CD with this method: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

I think our friend the Panda lost interest hours ago.

Sorry for the late response. He was able to get the disc to work by booting the installation up in safe mode. Previously, he tried restoring after the initial start up repair failed but Windows still was unable to start and the repair kept looping. Everything works OK now, but what could've been the problem? Sounds like some sort of hardware problem possibly?

May have been an update getting stuck, it happens.

If you get offered another bunch of updates, try and install kb982018 last.

You will need to change update settings to
