Just curious, do you know that there is a private messenger function this site which we could probably use for all of us and avoid the wait times and everyone else who has had any posts in the thread will not get the annoying emails if they have that set up in notifications. Thelma, see where I have colored the text red? windows is spelled windoes and I compared that to what Anak had sent to you as a sample and that is not like yours. I'd like to think navigating to that file and correcting that may be a good shot. I am digging into a machine now to see what it will take.

He has been helping me so greatly and it Is His thread, he started it especially for me, so I like to find out first what he finds of the 5 lines I found in the command prompt.

Not to jump in here, but did you Google your problem and see if any return hits give you something to try in order to fix it?

My guess is, something happened during the copy/paste/post process. It really should not be possible for the DIR command to return the results that you posted. The second "windoes" is possible, but not the first one (C:\Windoes\winsxs).

In post #53, Anak posts a screenshot of the dir results.

Could you please post a screenshot like Anak did?

A DIR query of (dir /s /b c:\Windows\audiodg.exe) should not include a folder named C:\Windoes. That is what leads me to think that those two instances are either typos or copy/paste/post errors or perhaps some spell checking plugin barfed.

If the second instance of "windoes" happened to be real, then we need to look at a few thing before we start renaming folders.

All of the permission are for Trusted Installers only and I guess the super secret admin or developer admin level can hack that. Is it possible to do some sort of selective file/folder repair from a disc?

Hi Thelma. We need to put our heads together. Couple of quick questions.
When you put the message up with the result of the elevated command prompt to search for the files we think/thought may be named incorrectly, were those entries on that message typed by you or copied and pasted. Mr Usernameissues stayed on that with me for several hours and we conclude that it's likely a typo. Help us to figure that out and what I thought was a winner is really a stinker and we need to take a different look at this.

My first thought about the misspelling of windows (windoes) is how did thelma post it? If she typed it in, it could be a typo; We have to take her dyslexia into consideration.
If she copied and pasted, it could be a corruption of some sorts.

Then there is the matter of her only finding 5 files; Should it be 5 or 7? Is it a different permutation for Dell laptops that causes the difference? What do you fellows find on your machines, 5 or 7?
According to this KB981013 article Microsoft (MS) is showing 9 files for the 64bit version of 7; In this one KB2670667, 16. Are the added files because they are hotfixes or am I comparing apples to oranges?

We have to wait until thelma gives us the answer; Did she type or copy/paste? If the answer is copy/paste I'm with UNI; We need to look at a few other things before we start renaming folders, like should she run the hotfixes?

If it is the latter (copy/paste) I have found remnants in her files of previous anti-malware programs, and an empty HOSTS file that could indicate that she had a previous malware infection that she may have only partially eradicated, doesn't windoes look like bad spelling in a phishing email?
True, an empty HOSTS file isn't all that serious because in its original state all the lines are rem'd out with the # symbol, but it could mean that a previous infection tried to write something in there and it either failed or the malware scans cleaned out the redirects and left it, the HOSTS file empty, but then, wouldn't the scan just delete the file?
I would like to see the remnants of the old programs removed and rebuild the HOSTS file.

UNI, in another thread I had thelma do the SFC scan multiple times in succession (3x's with reboots in between) and the scans found no violations. There are also tutorials here at 7F that show how to extract files from disks, shadow copies, system restore points, and it may be possible to use previous versions of these files that windows keeps internally on a users machine.
Its beginning to look like the best thing to do, is for thelma to do a repair install if she has a disk, but I'm still willing to look at a few other things, like, how about a reboot using the last known good configuration?

Caslon's suggestion sounds okay up until the BIOS part, I'm not sure if thelma would want to go that far. I had a problem with sound in a video and tried many variations of sound settings before I hit on the right combination.

cy, the windows remote assistance is between you and thelma, and the private messaging has limitations, the biggest being, you can't attach files or pix's if you need to.


So, two questions for thelma; Did you type or copy/paste, and do you have a windows 7 disk?

I have never done a screen shot and I am dyslexic so I wrote the command prompt lines on a piece of paper and than typed them in my answer in the thread. I checked it all 3 times but I am useless in spelling and the spell check did not work with all those numbers involved.
