• They both have tools to download and ask to run Safe Mode to uninstall.

• You might want to print the instructions especially for Avira.

It is getting on for your Friday evening, if you want to print out the instructions so you can go over them, then step away, have dinner and relax for awhile before you start the manual removal I will understand.

Good afternoon Thelma ,

There are a few things happening here:

• That Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet003\enum\root\ASWHWID\0000 is the complete entry for what you are trying to delete: (Avast! HardwareID) . The Registry Editor (regedit) may not allow you to delete just the DeviceDesc entry (Avast! HardwareID), but it may allow deleting the whole key. Try deleting the Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet003\enum\root\ASWHWID\0000

• Do you see the bottom entry within the Key?: abService REG_SZ aswhwid . You will need to go to Services and delete aswhwid; This also includes any other avast and avira services that reside in Services.
     Note

  Heed Brinks warning at the Services - Delete link; Either backup your registry or create a restore point before deleting anything from the Registry or Services.

• Are you using an elevated regedit? If not or you are not sure, go to where you open your regedit, right click on it to open the context menu then click on 'run as administrator' and say Yes to the UAC, try it that way. If that still does not work try deleting it while in Safe Mode.

• If you do not have them, but are interested in creating shortcuts for a regular and or an elevated regedit, let me know.

That is your video display driver, we don't want to fuss with that right now, we will look into that if it happens again. When/If you do see that again, see the lower left corner where it says 'View details in the event log? click on that, when the log opens copy the details, an easy way to do that is to:

Right click on the event, >copy >copy details as text >and then paste into a code box in your next post when it happens.

If you look up at the editor bar while posting, the code icon (#) is right next to the quote icon

My Windows 7 disk is there, I hope to bring it back ( if I can find it, All my stuff is stored there. )

Hello Anak,

I created a restore point ( that I also learned here ! )

Opened regedit as a administrator ( I always do)

but could not delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINR\SYSTEM\Controle Set 003|enum\root\LEGACY ASWHWID\0000 and
LEGACY ASWRVRT.

Also I could not find aswhwid in services.

I will go in safe mode now and see if I can delete these Keys in the register

Do you see any error messages when you try?

If safe mode didn't work your key may have embedded-null characters try this: https://RegDelNull v1.1 | technet.microsoft.com

This is getting to be a tough nut to crack, but we'll get there, it has to do with permissions and the trusted installer, and I'm trying to guide you with tools that you are used to.

• You say you have Revo Uninstaller, is it still installed, and have you ever used the 'Hunter Mode'? Hunter mode isn't specifically designed for registry work but it's worth a shot. If you do have Revo installed....

• Right click on Revo and 'run as administrator', the hunter mode is shown in the top menu bar fourth from the left in my version or if your listing in the Start menu (the rb: orb in the lower left corner) has Hunter mode listed separately like mine right click on hunter mode and 'run as administrator'.

• Say yes to any UAC prompts.

• You'll see this on your desktop it may even bleed through any open windows you have.

• Now open your regeditor as an administrator and place the hunter icon on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet003\enum\root\ASWHWID\0000 parent key and the context menu should open automatically.

• Click on Uninstall at the top.

• Does that remove the key?

• If it did, restart your machine and see if you can relocate that ASWHWID parent key, sometimes the key will re-insert itself on a restart because of the trusted installer and if that is the case we'll have to try a third party tool.

Hope You had a good weekend!

I have tried in safe mode ( for some reason I cannot use the F 8, it simply does not come up :huh: )

So I have been using msconfig.exe.
I could not delete them in the register, they are still there.

I get this message "Cannot deleteLEGACY_ASWRVRT error while deleting key ".

PS: Thought I had sent this message this morning, but it was still there when I got back at 15.30 my time, so send it now. Perhaps you get it twice.

I would try 'Kill and delete process', but I fear you would only get a message similar to the first one like 'No process found', but go ahead and try it, it would be interesting to see if it did find anything, please let me know one way or another.


We'll take two more tries at this and if they don't work we'll just let the ASWHWID key alone, at worst it may not allow future installs of avast.

From past conversation I remember you already have two log-ins; 1.) Administrator (admin) and 2.) Thelma PC (standard), this will place a second administrator account icon onto your desktop the built-in one should be the first one from the left, and it will have higher privileges than the one you already have.
If you like, there are instructions in the tutorial to rename the built-in admin to lessen confusion.


By the way; You were correct, you did send post #111 when you did and posts #113 and, post #114 are duplication's of #111. (well close enough for me )

• If you would like to clean up those two (posts 113 and 114) just go to them individually and at the bottom you will see an edit button click on that.

• At the bottom of the posting window click on 'Go Advanced' you will see a 'Delete this message' box at the top only after you click on 'go advanced'. Reasons for deletion are optional.

• When finished you may or may not see placeholders where 113 and 114 resided previously.

• Downside? Your post count will be adjusted downward by two.

I don't like Avast, I had it for a very short period, soI will definitely never install it again.

I took the two double posts away, it works confusing in the thread.

Will try again with the " kill and delete process" of Hunter.

I have not much hope.

I wanted to get this out to you early, as I may not be able to get back to you until very late your time, I'll PM you..

If the built-in administrator hasn't removed the ASWHWID parent key, try using this: Registrar Registry Manager v8 it is right there at the top of the page. You can click on the download link to the right or use this link. Once there click on 'Download free home edition', email address is optional, I did not enter mine.
I scanned it with Virus totals on line scanner and here are the good results: 0/53

• Click on the icon to start the install process, click on Run, say Yes to the UAC control, click on Next.

• Accept the license agreement, click on Next.

• Accept the default destination location. click on next.

• Accept the Start Menu location, leave the 'Don't create a Start Menu Folder' box empty, click on next.

• Creating a desktop icon is up to you, I usually do then place it into my Computer Ops Folder. click on next to review your choices.

• Click on Install if your satisfied, if not you can always go back to make changes.

• The install will work for a few seconds and come to a finished box with the 'launch Registrar Registry Manager' box checked, allow it and click on Finish.

• The program will open with a nag screen (the only downside I see) click on the Home Edition button at the bottom right corner and the program is ready.

• Copy this, the parent key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet003\enum\root\ASWHWID\0000 and paste it into the Address bar at the top of the program, click on the green Go button to the far right of the address bar. It will take you to that parent key.

• You will see the values of that key in the database area of the program.

• Go to Edit in the lower menu bar and click, click on 'Select All'. Then Delete.

• I have found it will leave the parent key folder and I have not found a way to delete that through the program, you may have to try deleting it through an elevated registry editor.

• Paste regedit into the orb search box. let the list populate regedit.exe will be at the top under programs.

• Right click on it and then click on 'Run as Administrator', go to the parent key and see if it will allow deletion.
