Which sounds are you not hearing?

If I don't have the external speakers plugged in I hear nothing, if I have the external speakers plugged in I hear every thing, Y tube, films and Windows sounds that the PC makes when it starts up.

That's the same for my pc Thelma. If I have no speakers plugged in there's no sound as my monitor has no speakers. You need to have some sort of output device plugged in to hear any sounds. That's perfectly normal.
Or have I misunderstood somehow?
The internal pc speaker is only for beeps on errors.

I should probably have mentioned that this is a laptop . Sorry this is a Dell laptop and it has always had perfect sound for about 4 years until on day early this year it stopped from one day to the other.

Ah right! Sorry, should have checked your specs. Had a late night last night! :roflmao:

My guess then, if it's playing out the speakers, it's probably a hardware problem. Possibly the speaker connection or connection on the motherboard.
Have you checked to make sure all the devices are enabled in control panel > Sounds > playback devices?

thelma, go to Control Panel\Device Manager, scroll down and click on Sounds; Right click on the first one listed, then click on Properties >Click on the Driver tab.
The fifth button down; Does it say Enable? If it does click on it then OK.

If you have more than one sound device listed check every one listed like you did the first one.

In the General box they booth mention that the device is working properly.

Under Driver there are 5 boxes.

1 driver details

2 Update driver

3 Roll back driver ( this one is faded so is no option )

4 Disable

5 Uninstall.

When I press the disable one a popup " Disabling this device will cause it to stop working. Do you really ect "

That is how it presents inself.

Did you leave them both with the button saying Disable? I know it is confusing, but disable is what we want to see there. No harm if you left Device Manager with both entries saying disable. Do you have sounds coming from your machine now?

If not the next step is to re-install both of the drivers for those two entries you saw under Sounds in Device Manager.
If you are willing to do that, ask for guidance on how to proceed.

I left them both on disabled, yes I agree it's confusing and I still have no sound if the external speakers are not plugged in.

I like to see if I can re-install them, but I wait for your help with that.

Since the rollback driver button was faded it is safe to assume that you have not installed any driver update(s) for those two devices you found in Device Manager\Sounds; That is a good thing.

• Go back to those entries, and click on the uninstall button(s). To be safe you should do one at a time, but windows should be able to handle two at a time; The decision on doing one or both is yours to make.

• Say yes to any prompts asking "Do you really want to do this?".

• Then the Apply button if it is not faded, and the OK button.

• Close out Device Manager and shutdown any other open programs.

• Restart your machine.

• You should see windows asking to reinstall the drivers for those devices as it starts or shortly after it reaches your desktop. Say yes to all prompts. In some cases I've seen with driver re-installation or new hardware, windows knows you need these drivers and will install without prompts from you. Watch the re-installation process carefully, especially if you uninstall both at the same time. Make sure there are two distinct drivers; One for each device.

• Test to see if you now have sound.

I did everything you asked and to be safe in two different sessions. I also did a restore point before I started.

You see I am learning ....

They both reloaded a new device ( they look it up in windows update :huh:.)

Then I tried the sound with some Y tube music. ( Carol King, very good, I will post it later for you )

NOTHING

Now there are two other sound related system devices further down in Device Manager ( High Definition Audio Controller ) Do you agree perhaps to do the same trick there ?

I started that Site Stuff Thread (Possible Change in a Tutorial), about the problems you were having with the dmlogcolletor download and running it until you switched to the administrator account, I tried to explain, but there seems to be some inconsistencies.

Could you please go there and explain step by step what you did, and what happened before you switched to the administrator account, especially how the shortcut file was produced?

The possible reason for this problem could be mechanical. When you remove the headphone/speaker jack , the contacts in the socket do not return to properly redirect to the internal speakers. This is not an uncommon problem. If this is the cause it is sometimes only dirty contacts and may be corrected by dipping the METAL part only in rubbing alcohol or contact cleaner and plugging the jack in and out a few times. More than this requires opening the case to realign the contacts as they can lose some of the tension required for a good connection.

Additional info,,,,it seems this issue has been a pain in the xxx since Vista days. The second link here is from 2008, but it looks some people were resolving this with a couple of drivers.

I have a ??? Has the thought of replacing the audiodg.exe file been entertained?

No, we haven't got that far as yet, but since my reinstall suggestion didn't work my next move was updated drivers, wait a minute...That audiodg.exe might be it. I looked in her drivers list/status and that animal is not listed, the audio service is on and running:
