transfer data from comp to comp

I just bought a belkin easy transfer wire thinking it'll let me transfer files from one computer to another... it seems it just transfer whole accounts without asking me what I want to transfer over.

I was looking for a better option than transferring to USB then transferring to other computer. Is there a way to do this?

Do not buy easy transfer wire and software - a complete waste of money!!

Either follow the instruction above or just network the two PCs, share the entire hard drive on the old PC and drag and drop what you need!

If you have a network, copy the data across that. If not, return the wasted cable, get an external USB drive, and back your own data up. I'm always amazed at how many people would rather trust software to decide what's imprtant to them, rather than just getting the data and moving it to another drive.

To solve this problem, I networked my desktop and laptop computers and use Microsoft Synctoy. Synctoy isn't perfect, but it gets the job done for my purposes.

I like synctoy myself. I've used it in some form for a good 4 to 5 years with no complaints. SyncToy makes a good backup tool, especially if you have two or more "homes" for your data.

I would pull for the external drive suggestion from DeaconFrost myself, plus when you are done it is backed up and safe on the external drive in case something happens.

Agreed from a standpoint of backup, but OP said he didn't want to use external media to move the stuff over.

But yes, backups are essential.

That leaves the network as the only viable option, and it's been suggested.
