transfer exe file and settings

I have just installed windows 7 and i have a 2nd hard drive that had windows xp but had crashed and wont boot.

I want to transfer an exe file and settings from the crashed hard drive to windows 7 hard drive.

Easy transfer would be an option if the other hard drive could be booted but it cannot. So....does anyone have a solution?

I dont have the install disk since it is an old program and didnt keep it.

First step would be to try a scandisk or something.

Next step would be to attempt repair with xp install disc

For something not very elegant, but it works, just reinstall xp on top of current install (if visible by setup) and your files will still be available.

And of course, you can burn yourself something like iren boot cd and have fun with drive recovery applications, but this is best done when you have another drive to copy recovered stuff to, but I guess some allow to copy them to a usb drive or something.

Anyway, we need more details and you should try with basic options, might be a very simple problem.

When you try to boot, how far does it take you (I should probably have asked this first)?

The re-install will kill the app he is trying to save.

If the OP chooses repair, DO NOT select repair the first time you see it when booting off the XP install disk. Choose repair the SECOND time you see the repair option.

My question remains - what is the name and version of the app you wish to save?

I've seen reinstall cases where even program files are kept, and he did say it was just a exe file, so we don't know where it is, if he can just take an exe then it might be anywhere on drive.

If you change account names and stuff, it should not overwrite documents and settings, as far as I know

But anyway, as I said in the edited post above, we first need to determine how far he goes when trying to boot, in order to choose best solution.

Simplest would be if he installs it as slave drive in his second computer ( unless he has an external drive case lying around ), would allow him to do error checking and possibly recovery in a much more user friendly way

The OP doesn't seem to be around to clarify, but his question does not indicate that he is having difficulty accessing the disk. The question involves transferrng a program for which he does not an install disk.

that and transfering some settings and documents probably, from what I understand, but may be you are right and it is just the application, thought there was more to it...

Thanks for the suggestions. I can access the hard drive that crashed...all of the data is there...its just that xp wont boot on that drive...i get the windows screen and then it reboots.

The problem i thought I had was you just cant copy a program file and run it on a new computer...it has to be installed through the setup file.

Since I didnt have the install disks anymore I thought there might be a way to migrate the program along with the windows settings to allow it to run.

But as an afterthought I just did a copy and paste from the old hard drive to the new.

I then double clicked the program...and windows 7 took awhile but to my amazement the program worked. I just had to reinsert the key.

The program is a data mining program for poker sites.
