Upgrading to a new SSD - Will my plan work?

Hi,

I want to put a SSD in the computer. I want to get a smaller one as this computer only has about 67 GB used. My current HD has 675 GB

My plan is
to install an SSD,
Run the original installation DVDs (3) and Driver DVD and
then reinstall the programs via the backup from an external SSD that I have with AOMEI program.

Is this plan workable?
Would the backup provide the updates?

I rarely if ever go on the internet on this computer and just run it with 2 or 3 programs that run constantly for days or weeks. I have another computer for my internet stuff.

No, your plan will not provide the updates.

However, you can restore your backup (provided it is an image backup) to a smaller drive as long as the drive is big enough to contain the used portion of the original drive. Since you say you have only 67GB used on your current drive, you should be able to restore the backup to an ssd that is at least that big. I personally wouldn't go smaller than a 120GB ssd.

Excellent! thanks.

So here is my new plan:

Do an image backup with AOMEI program, onto my external 120GB SSD,
Get an internal SSD 120 or 240 GB, probably at BestBuy locally,
Restore the backup onto the newly installed SSD.

Is that the way to go?

BTW I am doing the disc backup as an image file now. (Takes quite awhile)

Thanks!!! That is so cool and easy.

I post on lots of forums, but this one has excellent instructions that I will use elsewhere. I was set to put out two issues in the thread but did as was suggested and broke them into two threads. Consequently I got two excellent clear answers.

If you restore a backup from a normal hd to ssd it will not be setup correctly you will have to change settings manually

Since I am planning on using a SSD that is smaller than the HD I understand that I can ony restore from a disk image.

So therefore do I first
Reinstall Win 7 etc, on the newly installed SSD, then
Restore from the backup on my 120 GB External SSD?

The settings that samuria mentions, how would that be done manually? Can it be done with the SSD in place?

Your hardware specs says you have a desktop then on the model you mention a HP Pavillion g6 Notebook PC.
Is it a desktop or a Notebook?

You have two options:
- Clone the exiting HDD on the new SSD, resizing the C: partition. If you have a Recovery partition it is useless so don't clone it. Then you can format the C: partition on the HDD to use for data only (keep the system and recovery partitions on it).

- Do a clean install on the new SSD and use the HDD for data only. There is nothing like a clean install so I would do it, despite it is more time consuming). For the updates use Simplix (single file with all the updates but the tracking ones)

- You can replace the CD/DVD drive with a caddy to hold the HDD. You will have the speed of a SSD and the size of a HDD. That is what I did on my laptop.

Thanks Megahertz07,

Nice looking glider.

That was a mistake. I changed it to the Desktop option. I didn't see that window initially.

Right now all is on hold as I wait the ending of the CV stuff.
