Solved Using SFC /SCANNOW

Hi,

I have been told by using SFC /SCANNOW it will find any corrupt Windows files then ask for my Windows DVD to correct the files, is this correct?

Do I also need to uninstall SP1 because my DVD is pre-SP1?

Hi runedog and welcome to Seven Forums. SFC will not need your DVD or for you to uninstall SP1. It corrects the files from its own copies on disk. See this tutorial for how to run it properly.http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Hello Runedog,

Sorry, but no. That's how it was in XP, but in Vista and Windows 7, a clean copy of the system files are stored in protected CAB files within the OS itself now. You will no longer be asked for your Windows DVD while doing a sfc /scannow command. You will not need to uninstall SP1 either.

Thanks very much for getting back.

As a visually challenged (registered blind but with some sight) and phisically disabled I find this repair somewhat daunting. If I enclose the SFC file can someone tell me how to repair/extract the need files please?

It has already repaired some files. Just run it again until you get no problems,

I have run the SFC scan five times now and it still reports corrupted files, how many times should I need to run it?

Could you post a updated sfcdetails.txt file to see what is left that cannot be repaired?

Are you having any issues with anything? I ask because if not, then depending on what it in the log, it may not be worth the risk of trying to manually extract clean copies of files that cannot be fixed and replacing them in your current installation with the extracted ones.

From the looks of the log, it's all music, pictures, and videos in the corresponding C:\Users\Public\folder "Sample XXX" folders.

If you are not having any issues, then I wouldn't worry about it.
