Solved Video card overheats after cpu oc

ok here it is i have now wrote many of these in a quest to configure the best out of my system i can i am currently running a ta785ge 128 mb board 8 gigs of patriot g series viper ram im also running a radeon diamondhd5770 1 gig ddr5 card oc'ed from 800/1200 to 930/1400 plus my cpu is already oc'ed from 2.8 to 3.2 now when i oc the cpu to 3.4 also i do monitor the cooling i have a dual fan cooler master coper pipe heatsink my cpu runs very cool even when max load it runsa to about 38-40 at the most cool down 27-32 idle the vid card same thing it is round 45 to 50 idle when it crashes during game play i see it up to 65 c and that is with the fan blowing 60 % i also tryed oc the cpu and turning the vid card fan to 100% it worked for just a short 5 minutes had some hang ups the graphics went in and out it froze then came back my cpu runs fine oc'ed at 3.4 just my vid card cant sustain game play on that speed when it is 3.2 everything runs very well is there a way i can stablize this card to run on the highest oc'ed mhz i can get on the cpu or is my aim for greatness going to be foiled by being bottle necked by my graphics card please someone tell me something also my cpu is a phenom 2 x4 quadcore 925 edition am3 socket oh yeah and will upgrading the cpu make a difference or vise versa the card?

65 degrees is on par with temps for the 5770 under load, at least from my experience.

Your game crash may be connected to your overclock of the card. Last night while playing Dirt 2, I experience a game crash. The only settings I had changed to the video drivers from the previous day's gaming session was that I upped the core and memory frequencies in Overdrive. I set the clocks back to default and had no more problems.

Edit: Also, in my opinion, if you want to overclock your card, I suggest doing it manually. It will take a while longer, but Overdrive seems to set the clocks too high.

you may have to increase the fans on your case.

there's a lot of hot air inside your pc that needs to be blown out.

so you think if i just drop the card back to original settings i can have my cpu running the highest oc'ed speed hmmm i will igive it a shot i mean how much of a difference will i see downing the card verses uping the cpu will it be around the same or will i see a speed boost at all ?

Also, the performance you get is going to depend upon the resolution of your monitor and the "bells and whistles" you have enabled during gameplay. An overclock on the cpu may help a bit, but if you got too much stuff going on in the game with too much eye candy happening, the overclock on the cpu won't help you out at all

fans are not a issue

i have 2 blowing in 2 blowing out 88mm fans

2-88 mm fans on the heatsink

600 watt psu

temps on the cpu 30-32 idle system 26-28 idle

full load cpu 39-42 system 29-30

so heat has nothing to do with it and i feel the fans that are blowing out they blow nothing but cool air out and i have one right in the middle of the mb i also go a little further by cleaning the fans once every 2 weeks

well i have a multicore phenom 2.8 i have pretty much all the stuff a good or should i say decent gamer needs
i can play anything thats out but i just want to maximize all i can out of my system
after all this is the first one i built soley on my own and the sad thing is im still not happy i see other stuff out there and i already want to upgrade im sure you were the same way when you found the force hahahaa

► Back off the card overclock / retain the 3.4 CPU overclock

If it still crashes - the CPU OC is not stable.

If it doesn't crash, then the card clocks are probably too high for the cards stock voltage.


Another possibility is that your PSU is out of spec and is not providing enough amps for both both CPU and GPU OC.

Some users have reported that instead of 23 amps on the 12v rail, it's only dishing out 18 amps.

Well smarty i tryed what you were telling me keeping the 3.4 and bringing the card back to the normal values

well in any case i actually left it idle with the game screen on and fell asleep lol anyway when i woke i noticed the log on screen and i figured it crashed

so here i go waiting to see soulutions box because windows recovered from a major crash so i assume once again my card failed me even on normal values

I also didn't mention my card was repackaged return still was over 200.00 bucks at the time though think that has something to do with it or is it just my 2.8 oc'ed to 3.4 can't handle the response time neded to keep everything going well ?

I can always go a step further and upgrade the mb and go with a new higher cpu but then i would be a waste of 8 gigs ddr2 ram I am also searching for a board that can dual ddr2 /ddr3 ram that way i can still use my 8 gigs of ddr2 without buying new ram

please if you know of any AM3 socket boards dual ram types ddr2/ddr3 and crossfire ready and must be quadcore or 6 core ready send me links also im sorry if im asking to much of you guys but your the only people i can ask and trust thus you know how delicate the situation is

oh yeah also smartey i read the specs on my psu it powers everything very well sorry i didnt mention this earlier i have alot of devices affixed to this pc card readers blue tooths hubs and such and the psu handles all there needs

If the card is actually faulty, then yes it would have an impact on stability.

I'd run a 10-15min test with either Kombustor or Furmark

*NB when you download MSI Afterburner, Kombustor needs to be installed separately.

Whichever test you run, keep an eye on the temps as both will place maximum stress on the card.

Run it at stock card clocks - if the card artifacts (shows dots or flickering) or crashes the PC entirely, then it could actually be faulty.

If it does crash , re-run the tests with the CPU and memory at stock speeds to eliminate any unstable OC confusion.

Alternatively, it could still be the PSU that is running 'out of spec' ie Not delivering the amps it's supposed to be.

I'd be more inclined to say the OC isn't actually stable. The fact that it seemed to be okay at 3.2ghz suggests this.

It could be insufficient vcore or the memory speed is just a tad to high for the current settings.

Did you stress test it at all @ 3.4ghz? (Prime95 Blend Mode for 8hrs /memtest86+ etc)

Devices like that don't use a lot of power so that shouldn't be an issue.

well if anything im already looking into a new psu and a new board crossfire available so im assuming 750 watt to 800 would do the trick

im going to eventually ditch this board i pretty much heard that this board doesn't oc like it should basicly the board is supposed to be for extreme gamers and oc'er but it has a cap on it so ..... im looking into a more user friendly board which blows ass cause i just spent alot on this rig

but im going to plan this one real carefull though im going to run those test before i totally ditch this board but pretty much i would say in another 3 months im going to config a new one and toss this to my dad give him a upgrade

so im looking to spend atleast another 600 bucks on something worthy especially by the time three months the cpu's and desired board will be lower and the 5870 so i can throw the crossfire together and get some decent ddr3 yeah and i think a new case would be a good idea too ...

And a good quality 750-850w should be perfect for crossfire (if you are eventually planning on crossfiring a pair of 5870's down the track)

But definitely take that board to it's limits before you decide it's not up to scratch. No point in blowing extra $$$ when after a bit of tweaking, you could probably make it behave.

yeah your right but im almost sure i have taken it to it's limit the only other thing i can do is get a better cpu but down the line i still will have to make the jump to ddr3 which i think is a little costly

Have you ensured that your CPU OC isn't actually in fact, forcing a further OC on your GPU?
Run video stability tests with the PC @ total stock. If it crashes, RMA the video card.

I have tryed all angles the card is fine i tested it stock and oc as well as the cpu

i just think i got to much power for my board to handle even though they say it is made for oc so my last result is im looking for a new cpu and in the future a mb

i can update my cpu to 6 core so im going to roll with it grabbing a new cpu and see if there is a difference i have perfectly fine performance but i would be alot happier knowing it could go a little further

so pretty much looked at the prices for a phenom 2 x6 3.2 black edition is about 300.00 dollars plus change i also heard some cpu's steppings wont allow you to oc further as well so im going to try a upgrade and just hang on to the quadchip in case i have failure

I think at this point that would be the smartest choice i actually have the card oc'ed and the cpu oc'ed from,2.8 to 3.2 the cpu and card are very stable so ....

it can only be the cpu holding me back now if everything else is working without a hitch

Yep, you might have found your current chips 'wall' (pretty low low though).

There may be some other settings you could try, but I'm not as familiar with AMD overclocking as I am with intel, so I'm not much help in that area.

Going for a 6 core isn't a bad move though, since it can be transferred to a better board when you head down that path.

And going for a newer stepping is almost always a good move. For both camps.

(The only time it's not a good move is if you get a chip from a 'bad batch' or they drastically change something for the worse. But new steppings are invariably improvements and not backwards steps)

OC your CPU again, but this time, research what your OC is doing. eg. is it in fact OCing your video card in the process. pay close attention to your volts and ensure your NB is getting enough juice.
I had a similar issue with a mates computer, his OC was good, his video card was good, but combining the two together brought out the gremlins.
Basically I removed the factory overclock from the card due to lack of settings in his mobo to stop the Pci-E Bus being ramped up with the CPU OC.

i did bring the clock down to the default values and still it failed on a oc of 3.4 compared to being stable on 3.2

also i left the title screen of the game up and i would say atleast 8 minutes in it crashed and it was under clocked with the cpu being overclocked so it has to be the cpu overloading nothing else makes sense

sometimes we got to take defeat not all components are made equal or i just happend to get a bad cpu and my stepping is only 2 so ......... what else could it be?

@thorn8369 I also checked my mhz it is actually 3315 and has me listed at 3.2 so in fact i might be like a 3.6 in stead of the 3.4 that is stated so it could be a mix up of values

cause i have 2 oc programs on here but only used one that might also have a effect on my system the correct speed is actually faster then stated right now im saying 3.2 but in reality the system is 3.3 so in fact that may be the answer to all my questions

also wondering why that would be i also checked all the voltages they are fine you know also it might be a headache going through this but it is way better then spending money on a so called tech that probally knows less then I

so im welcoming the challenge but still mystified by the new hexcore chip aka 6 core so even though im still trying to control this beast of mine im still leaning towards more of a upgrade or better chip that will prove more reliable then the one im using now
