Ignore the x15 and x17 stuff. Get the x17.

Do you understand what file you need?

An ISO is an image file. You have to burn it to a DVD to make it usable for an installation.

Once you have it burned, you can reinstall Windows.

You will need to activate the installation and that's when you use the Product Key.

I assume that's what you want to do.

That will do the wiping.

Windows should supply the proper drivers, including sound. If it does not, worry about that later, AFTER you get Windows reinstalled.

You'll need a second HD to put the backup on since the reinstall will clean up your existing drive.

Just thought I'd mention backup. I'm sure the tutorials mention backing up your system though.

He needs to buy a Windows 7 installation disc, probably from someone like Newegg.com for $100 or $120 or whatever they are charging today.

With only 2 GB of RAM, he should probably install the 32 bit version.

That sticker on his laptop won't help him if it is for Vista, and it probably is if that's what came on the laptop when he bought it.

That's right.

Microsoft operating systems are not free. He paid for Vista. He did not pay for Windows 7.

You paid for Windows 7 when you bought your machine. That's why you are legally entitled to reinstall Windows 7 at no charge.

Sure, assuming he has a good Vista installation disc and a valid Product Key.

If he has no disc, he could try to find a Vista ISO, just like you found a Windows 7 ISO. Then burn it to a disc. But I'm not sure if Vista ISOs can easily be found.

He has an Acer, so he should have another choice. The laptop probably has some built-in method of "restoring to factory condition", by using a special partition on the hard drive. That would be just like a reinstall--the laptop would be in the same state it was in when first manufactured. He should consult his manual or the Acer web site for exact instructions, but I'm pretty sure any Acer laptop has that capability. It's done through programs and menus placed on the hard drive when the laptop was manufactured.

Try this for your friend:
Vista ISO - Download and Create Installation DVD or USB

He or she can install Vista x64 if the hardware supports it.

Your friend can check out Vista forums - you should focus on what you're trying to do.

I wiped my computer out using the DVDs I burnt but for some reason I don't have office e on my computer? Also I installed utorrent and when I try to use the magnet to download music ect it says something to do with protocol don't know what that means? Also the copy of Windows 7 home prem is it the legit full copy?

Office isn't included in the Windows installation.
You need a different product key and install disc to install MS Office.
Did you get the Belarc Advisor audit report ?

If you downloaded the ISO from Digital River you have the full legitimate Windows 7.

I don't use torrents, so I can't help with that.
