Win 7: Black screen on boot up, before login screen?

Thanks again. I am able to complete the long test using seatools. It took more than 4.5 hours. It crashed two times, so I repeated the test. The crash test time in not included in 4.5 hours. It passed the test. No errors found. You can review the attached screenshot(LongtestLog.jpg, LogTestResult, jpg). :geek:

As I pressed ESC during startup. It showed CPU Intel Core
Memory 8192 MB passed
256 KB L2 Cache
System BIOS Shadowed
Video BIOS Shadowed

As I do not have a repair CD, I am using F8 ===> Repair Computer===> Command Prompt

As I am entering command prompt via Repair computer option, is it causing

Code:
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time

There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart windows and run it again.

for d:\windows sfc/scannow ?
I did run F8 ===> Repair Computer===> Startup Repair ==> Resulted in "Startup Repair Could not detect the problem "

The logs says "Root cause found:
---------------------------
Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully."

I am attaching the Startup Repair log also for your review (StartuprepairLog.txt, StratupRepair.jpg). :geek:

I run the SFC /SCANNOW ===> Resulted in "There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart windows and run it again."

Is there a way to get this SFC /SCANNOW to work, so I can produce minidump?

I restarted the computer after this startup repair==> Black screen with cursor in the middle

Thanks for helping.

Awaiting for your directions

The fact that SeaTools crashed twice would tend to indicate that the problem is with hardware rather than anything else - but I'll leave Steve to do the detailed diagnosis.

sfc will not produce a Minidump. It simply tries to repair any damaged or corrupted system files. It does the repairs on startup. It produces the CBS log that Noel looked at. When the laptop crashed during Seatools, exactly what did it do? What did you see and if there was a Blue Screen, what did it say?

Thanks for your questions. 1st Crash was my bad. I connected the charger to power strip & Power strip was disconnected from power outlet. It crashed as the battery ran out . It happened after 77% completion of Long Test. :o

I restarted the test. 2nd Crash cause continuous beep sound. Screen was not blue. It was gray with jumbled funny characters (same as seaTools screen color). There was no messages as such.

I restarted Long Test 3rd time. It went OK. I got the screenshot for your review.:geek:

Awaiting for your suggestions.

The continuous beep code for IBM is a power supply issue. So, it was probably related to the first crash. What kind of graphics do you have? Do you have the on board graphics, a dedicated card or switchable graphics? If switchable graphics, which type card do you have, Nvidia or AMD?

Does the issue point to Graphic Card ? :geek:

This suggests you don't have SP1 installed, yet your system specs say you do. Can you clarify whether this is the case or not?

Also, see if you can get to C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. If so, copy the file, zip it up and upload it to One Drive or Dropbox, set it to public and give us the link.

Thanks for your reply. It looks weird. I am not able to find C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP in laptop.

I did

Code:
dir /s MEMORY.DMP on listed drives x:\, c:\, D:\, E:\ ===> all return
"File Not Found"

I am able to find C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP on working computer.

What is the reason for not creating MEMORY.DMP file on this troubled laptop?

I checked another computer . It says

OS Name: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
OS Version: 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
OS Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation

C:\>ver

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

The laptop that has issue shows

D:\Windows\System32>ver

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

System info says:

OS Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
OS Manufacturer : Microsoft Corporation

When this lap top was working, I saw it said windows 7, 64 bit, SP 1.

I hope this helps.

Awaiting for next steps.:geek:

Is there any command settings that force create MEMORY.DMP during boot on my situation?

It look like something is blocking the Win 7 start. I am not sure, what it is.

I did create x:\windows\Minidump directory via command line. x:\windows\Minidump disappeared upon restart.

I did create D:\windows\Minidump directory via command line. D:\windows\Minidump did not contain any entries upon restart.

Where to go from here? :geek:

Thanks team/reply. Before getting your reply, I started the Bitdefender using rescue CD. It is still in progress.

After scanning 72K items. It says there are 82 infected items.

When I ran MSE from bootable CD earlier (I posted in this thread), it did not find any offensive items.

Does it make sense/normal?:geek:

Do you want to run this partition stuff by aborting Bitdefender or after completion of it?

Do you advise to use resolve issues of Bitdefender in this situation? :geek:

Thanks for helping.

Normal.

Once I got a brand new pen drive. Unpacked it, inserted it in the computer and scanned with BitDefender. It got 49 threats there.

For a bootable virus scan, I trust on WDO.

If it reports in the same line, then infections are really there.

As there is a cause to suspect a virus infection, I would suggest you to run WDO, now or later that depends on you. If you want, you may complete the BitDefender scan, but do the WDO.

You can do the partition stuff right now, or after completing the scans, whatever you like. Do it when you can. Either me or anybody else who can check it will be able to guide you for the further steps depending on the partition table.

Five partitions are there in the HDD.
1.jpg
A regular MBR disc (as formatted using the windows 7 installation media in the normal course) can hold only four partitions. One more added partition converts the disc to dynamic, and a dynamic disc cannot boot. It is the situation here. So that is the reason behind not booting.

Now, I am not the real expert in this particular field. I have limited knowledge about this situation. As far as I can say, you have two things to try.

First, Try to convert the MBR disc to GPT disc. How to Convert MBR Disk to GPT Disk | MiniTool Partition Wizard Tutorial. In normal course this conversion is destructive, it deletes the entire data on the disc including the partition table; but the Partition Wizard does it in a non-destructive manner, without losing anything. I can say it because I have done it myself, for my own HDD.

A GPT disc can hold more than four partitions there. So there is a chance that the computer will boot back after this conversion. If not, Run startup repair for three separate time. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105541-startup-repair-run-3-separate-times.html

Second, If the first attempt does not work, the second option is to format the entire HDD and start afresh. But that will erase on the data on the HDD. So I would suggest you to backup your user data externally before doing the formatting. Use a bootable Linux distro to do it. A nice guide is here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/287439-emergency-kit-save-your-files-dead-os.html . It can be done in windows recovery environment too, http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93347-copy-paste-windows-recovery-console.html .

If you want to have more than 4 partitions there in the HDD, format the HDD as GPT using Partition Wizard.

Thanks for your insights.

I am puzzled ! :(

This computer was working perfectly, before this issue show up (1 week ago).

I learned that Lenovo keeps a hidden recovery disk. Is this one shows up as 5th Partition? :geek:

How does my HDD become dynamic from non dynamic suddently?

What could be the trigger event for this?

Who is the expert on this field of this forum? :geek:

Thanks for helping.

How does my HDD become dynamic from non dynamic?
By adding one more partition.

What could be the trigger event for this?
It is you only who can answer to this question .... because only the user can add a partition.

Who is the expert on this field of this forum?
jumanji and Kaktussoft are two top experts in this field among some others. DonnaB is already in your thread, and I think she is also having some insight in this field.
