win 7 reboots randomly Kernel-Power

I am having the same problem but it does seem to be a problem with the network. The only time it will reboot is if I am transferrring a very large batch of files. 60GB or so. I will drag and drop a number of folders that are quite large and it will always reboot at some point during the transfer. I am thinking it has something to do with the driver that is being used. I will try a different driver and see if it resolves the problem.

Antivirus causes that, specifically AVG.

It did not solve my problem John. I tried a different driver. I even when as far as disabling the internal NIC and installed a PCIx Broadcom NIC with the latest drivers. I still have the problem. The PC will work flawlessly for days on end but as soon as I try to move do a large data transfer between hard drives it will BSOD and reboot. If I find a solution I will post it.

Did you try uninstalling your antivirus solution, and not only disabling?

@darthwhit: In addition to what torrentg suggested, note that the OP's machine was apparently rebooting without a BSOD, which made analysis of the symptom more difficult. If your machine is actually producing a discernible "blue screen" error message (white text on a blue background), then it's also presumably generating a minidump which can be analysed for clues.

If uninstalling the AV doesn't resolve the symptom...

Either way, you should consider starting your own thread so that your issue has the best chance of receiving the individual attention it deserves. There's virtually nothing to tie in your symptom to the OP's.

Well I had two crashes when trying too extract 7 GB of files to my desktop, I also have AVG installed.

I then disabled AVG and the files copied with no problem. It may have been coincidence but I have now installed Avast, instead, to see if it makes any difference. I’ll report back with an update over the next few days.

So to answer a couple of questions. This is a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium. No antivirus has been installed. When the computer restarts there is no visible BSOD.

I have tried a couple of things to try an isolate the problem. Instead of initiating the file transfer from the primary PC I initiated it from a seperate computer over the network. This time I had the same problem but it did give me a BSOD instead of a hard restart.

The next test I did is install my old hard drive that still had Windows 7 RC installed without changing anything on the target hard drive of the data transfer. I was successfully able to transfer 380GB worth of files without any problems whatsoever. This tells me that it is most definitely a software issue and rules out any hardware problems. I will go back to running the target drive as my primary drive and reload Win 7 to see if I can't track it back to a missing or wrong driver.

That is my best guess as of yet.

So I think I have narrowed it to the hard drive. I restarted once and heard some weird noised from the drive. I went back to my old 120GB and everything seems to be fine. I will run spinright when I get a chance. Luckily it has a 5 year warrenty.

Just joined the site and wanted to post because I've been having the same issue as the OP: event 41, no BSOD, on a brand new Asus box.

I've tried tinkering with various things including replacing the power supply (original supply was sub-standard anyway), running system scan, moving boot drive to another HD, disabling auto-reboot, changing power strips, &c. and nothing seems to be doing the trick.

The computer randomly reboots about 2-3 times per day and there is no pattern to what I'm doing when it does. Sometimes I'll be reading web pages and using WinAmp, at others it will reboot with nothing running except for the desktop and the basic applications (i.e.: reboot from screen saver but not sleep state).

This problem is driving me insane and any additional suggestions that you guys have would be welcome.

Kernel Power Event ID 41, Task Cat 63

Struggled with this prob for several weeks having hourly trips for no apparent reason. Reading a lot of solutions; all fairly complex.. Swapping around mem sticks ( I use 2 of 2 Gb each) I found that one seems to be faulty. Running on one now and no probs for well over a day now despite some severe stress testing. Fingers crossed!!

Tried going into the BIOS and disabling the things mentioned in that post John, but none of them seemed to change the stability.

I see some people have been fixing the problem by slightly upping the voltage to the memory, but that's not an option in my BIOS. The box I'm running has an odd "AI Manager" interface that allows me to up the threshold on the voltage but not to tinker with things more directly.

I should also add that I ran MemTest to see if there was any physical problem with my RAM and that doesn't seem to be the issue either.

I got the same problem, except there is no reboot but rather a total FREEZE without any bluescreen.

Any good ideas how to identify if the power supply is the problem? I bought it recently when I upgraded my computer so the warranty is still there, but I don't want to sent it to service if it's not broken.

I've also ran the memtest image.

Is there a chance, that bad driver is the cause?

It is really interesting that so many people experince the same kind of problems, and the other interesting thing is that the configurations with Bsods are all new like mine.I have a Gigabyte P55 chipset board and choosing XMP(Extreme Memory Profile) which automatically adjusts the frequency and voltage of rams and processor seems to work for me since I haven't had bsods till then, it may be worth trying....

Somebody in finnish forums was having the same problem. He solved that by turning off harddrive sleep timeout from power saving settings. I give it a shot and see for few days if that helps.

And I'd still like to hear ideas how to identify the faulty driver/hardware?

Other suggested solution is to turn of AMD Cool'n'Quiet, so if you got CPU from AMD, give it a shot. I will. Turning of HDD powersaving doesn't seem to help at all.

Turning Cool'N'Quiet didn't helped either, but...

I lowered my DDR3 rams from 1333MHz to 1066MHz and played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for couple of hours and NO freeze. Usually it crashes in one hour.

I tested my Seagate HD with spinrite and verified that the drive was the problem. I will be sending it in for a replacement. 5 year warranties are great. I haven't had a single problem with any other hard drives in the system.
