Win7 fails to restart

I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64bit and sometimes it fails to restart after installing Windows updates. It configures the updates during the shutdown process, goes through 100%, but the shutdown or restart process takes forever.

Any ideas?

Two methods:
-boot into safe mode and use system restore
-boot Win7 install disc,go to WinRE and use system restore from this level

Hi Flavius,

I don't think it's a restore issue, but possibly a bug that is not allowing Windows to restart after successfully installing critical updates from Microsoft Windows Update.
