win7 home prem -> Win7 ultimate 64 bit

Hi Folks,

First post on this forum. I'm running Win7 home prem 64. I have win7 ultimate 64.

How do I upgrade from one to the other without loosing any data?

Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade says not to use the product key that came with the box...to use windows upgrade anytime key?

I wanting to upgrade to ultimate to run virtualPC for cert exam study.

Any advice much appreciated.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Your version of Windows 7 Ultimate should have the Windows Anytime Upgrade facility providing it is a retail copy.

Click Start>All Programs>Windows Anytime Upgrade then type in the Windows 7 Ultimate product key and wait while the upgrade completes - typically half-an-hour or so.

You'll probably need to use the automated telephone activation wizard, Start then type slui.exe 4 and follow the instructions.

If your copy of Windows 7 Ultimate doesn't have Windows Anytime Upgrade you need to log onto the Microsoft store and purchase an upgrade product key there. As soon as your credit card payment has been accepted, a product key will be e-mailed to you.

Hi Seavixen,

I ran the Windows Anytime Upgrade, the only key that was in the box was the product key..I tried entering that and it looked to be working then said that the key was in valid, all that;s in my retail ultimate box is the 32 bit disc, 64 bit disk, upgrade from xp leaflet and a welcome to you pc simplified windows 7 booklet! thanks for the feedback,,any other ideas?

Obviously, what you have is the ability to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7, which doesn't help you.

As I see it, you have three choices:

Buy a Windows Anytime Upgrade product key from the Microsoft Store and use that.

Backup all your personal data and carry out a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate using the disc and product key you already have.

Create another partition on your hard drive and dual boot your copy of Windows 7 Ultimate with the Windows 7 Home Premium version already installed.

Strangely I rebooted to start doing a dual boot...and it came up 'upgrading 30%' the booted into Windows Ultimate....weird..cheers Ronnie

Looks like a glitch in the WAU procedure then.

I've got a vague suspicion it may be related to SP1. I seem to recall a similar instance where the upgrade went without a hitch with Windows 7, but hit the same problem as yours if you try the upgrade with Windows 7 SP1.

Anyway, pleased to hear you've succeeded and thanks for the update.
