A number of conceptual TV commercial spots by director Marty Martin (awesome name) produced for Microsoft with a tight budget, short 3 days deadline and a Canon 5D Mark II SLR gives some clues to what the up and coming mainstream worldwide launch campaign for Windows 7 might focus on and look like.
Bearing in mind these are just three out of the five videos produced in total, here they are for your viewing pleasure.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1p1_JNCEds&feature=player_embedded"]YouTube - Windows 7 college spots 2 shake[/ame]
This spot is far from perfect technically. Because we were so rushed, a lot of the compositing wasn't done with as much care as we would have liked. Each element/character in the video was shot separately then placed into the frame where we wanted everything. A lot of compositing, a lot of rotoscoping, for a little video!

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4FbtCHUIss&feature=player_embedded"]YouTube - Windows 7 college spots 3 personalization[/ame]
For 2 out of the 5 videos, we embarked upon creating silly abstracts spots that indirectly communicated a feature in Windows 7.

To me, because we had such limited resources, this video serves almost more as previz for an eventual "real budget" spot, but all in all I'm pretty pleased given our limitations. Each element in the video was shot separately then placed into the frame where we wanted everything. A lot of compositing, a lot of rotoscoping, for a little video

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aoAGRt3ln0&feature=player_embedded"]YouTube - Windows 7 college spots 1[/ame]

This one was done by the very talented Catherine Feeny.

We lost a number of creative battles on this particular spot, and maybe we'll toss the unabridged, heartwarming, version up one of these days

Interesting focus.

Me for one though, Aero shake is most unexciting, hardly something I'd make a commercial about.

I liked the personalization one.

The movie maker... meh, it's okay.

Overall, I'd say none of these really make me want to run out and buy a copy of Windows 7 right now. I'd say they act more as a reminder that it's available, and get it if you feel like it. They don't make it seem indispensable to me.

The only one I liked is the Live Movie Maker ad.

I don't know someone who uses either Aero Shake or Aero Flip 3D without just messing around. They just seem like fun little tools and don't really accomplish anything.

The personalization ad didn't really make sense... who closes their laptop after attaching gadgets and changing the wallpaper? Also, that guy reappeared after she closed the laptop?

Microsoft is going to need to do a lot better than this. These ads would never sell me on 7. Maybe they should do a live dvd like various Linux distros do. Let people get a real feel for how it compares to XP and Vista.

for every person who ran the beta, rc, and the rtm there are at least 100 who have not tested it. these people do not run alpha or beta anything on their systems. as for giving away anything come on. microsoft could never get away with charging for the rc.

I don't know, the "open" beta for Aion (an MMORPG) was able to charge people $5 a piece for a access code, and the people paid for it too.

people in general are far more likely to pay for a game than the os it runs on. plus after the fiasco of vista pre sp1 and undelivered ultimate extras do you really think people are willing to pay to test a new os from microsoft?

I'm thinking that if people have money, there are some willing to spend it to get the "sneak peak" before anyone else.

For those who say they don't like the ads, maybe we should come up with ideas of our own.

Here's one of my own: There's a lady "working" in an office. Actually she's got a ton of instant messenger windows (MSN Messenger to be exact) typing and communicating with all her friends. She then notices her boss coming, so she quickly grabs the Microsoft Word window and shakes it, making all the other windows disappear. The boss walks by and the woman assures him that she is doing her "work."

This one is a bit silly, but would be kick a$$: Microsoft should go get Daniel Craig for this one. Q has built James Bond a new car with an intelligent computer running Windows 7. James Bond is chasing the bad guys and using the multi touch screen features of Windows 7 and he's tapping on the screen. He drags the targeting system screen to one side of the screen (maximizes on the left) and the GPS window with tracking on the bad guys (maximizes on the right). He then catches up to the bad guys in his car, so Bond goes to the taskbar and taps the pinned app that launches rockets from his car which blows up the bad guys. James Bond is 007 and Microsoft has Windows 7.
