Windows 7 No Go!!

CHKDSK /r was started in Win 7 because of errors showing in log files.

Were these a sort of 'general' log files that said something like:

Chkdsk shows errors..
Error return from Chkdsk ox80000001a Code 01

(which only indicates that chkdsk was run and had an error)

Or, was is a 'Chkdsk.log', produced by Chkdsk, something like:

Check sum error, sector 0x3a8b
CRC error, repaired byte old:ae new:af
Can't read cyl 0x2cf hd 0xe sec 0xaf

A kind of 'gibberish', so to speak...

I can see files just by going to a C:\> through the repair function of the install disk or with F8 booting to the 'select OS' page.

The file system data structures appear good...
Don't know much about NTFS though. 'Technet' should help there.
OTOH, the 'chkdsk /r' was "Repairing" your NTFS HDD, when something bought the farm...

F8 booting to 'select OS' - do you actually see that (bootmgr) screen?

There is an update to the ATI driver. Can't install from C:\> on the box.

There should be a 'Cmd prompt' for that, from a normal working install), but sounds like you're still stuck with the .wim winimage, packed version, who doesn't know anything about the one that's supposed to run...
Where's he gonna 'install' it to ?

Is the ATI a zip file, .exe, or something else?
If its zip, see what files are inside.
Should be a .sys, .inf, .dll and maybe .exe plus more...
If its .exe, then winrar or 7zip or others should give more info about it.
Don't execute (launch) the .exe, just let those other tools 'look' at it.

Post the list of 'unzipped' filenames, and look in \win\sys32\drivers\ for the same .sys name.
Also \win\inf\ for the same .inf name.
Then \win\sys32\ for the .dll name, maybe .exe and others also.
By same name, I mean not nec exactly the same (tho they might be), but off by a number or letter or two.

Do you have 'tinyhex' as a plugin, in your BartPE ? Or on the Hirens?

Tinyhex was not distrib as part of default PEBuilder, but was listed somewhere on a referenced "favorites', or 'suggested', or 'popular' type of list,
relative to Bart's home page, somehow.

Came across this on another thread here. "What I did was I just went to reinstall Windows in the same directory. Then when it did the copying of the image and went to reboot for the install, I noticed it showed me the boot menu to go back to Windows 7. So what I did was I stopped the installation from that point and I booted Windows 7. Went to the local disk and deleted the startup files in %Windows_temp folder and then did MSCONFIG selected the Boot tab and removed the setup from the bootmenu."

Not certain if what he did was let the files copy to the HD then catch it before the system rebooted to use the files for a complete installation.

Ive had this problem before, was due to a corrupt registry. i had to format to fix it, and i dont use ANY registry cleaners what so ever, cept CCleaner, that works fine for W7 RTM x64 Ultimate.

Registry cleaners in general do absolutly nothing, why would you even take the chance using CCleaner.

The only option at this point is to format the disk and reinstall...

Not ready to throw in the towel. There is an answer. It ultimately may end up doing a clean install. But, not desperate to get it up and running so will use this as a learning experience. If I find a solution other than reinstalling Win 7 will post the results.

Next move will be finding the backup registry file to try to replace the existing one.

Last resort is trying the option noted in post #22.

So far not successful updating the ATI drivers.

You could try to install that HDD in another box too... and try a boot

I did learn something from this. I learned it's much faster to reinstall the Op system than to try and fix it.

Back up is your friend and reinstalling takes less time than typing a page of info.

That is the one thing I love about Win7 is that reinstalling takes ten minutes which is much faster than trying to fix it.

Very true. The easy way is to reinstall. As also stated, forensics is 'sometimes' fun! Puzzles are a challenge and a learning opportunity. Allows one to share that experience through helping others.
Aside from the obvious and easy solution what steps would you take to solve the problem? One suggestion I will try is to find another box (my others are laptops) and swap out the drive to see if it will boot from that machine. Not confident it will but worth a try.

What about repair install?

Has worked well for me on many screwups. Just run the installation medium and choose upgrade. It will leave all of your programs, files and settings exactly as they are but reinstall the operating system around them. You will need to re activate. It is a great way to re-establish the boot, too

I have installed CCLeaner on hundreds of machines and never had a single complaint. Same with the Auslogics defraggers. These are the state of the art in tech.

Sorry Amedeus, that just shows what drivers were loaded on bootup and have little value as to your problem.... I think its time for that clean install that we were talking about ...

Exactly what is "his problem" ?

His OP, 08-25-2009, said he could not get into 'Safe mode'. = Post # 1

His post # 5, 4 Weeks Ago, says "produces a blank screen" in selection of w7.

Tews post # 26, 3 Weeks Ago, said "format the disk and reinstall."

Now, in post # 34, 7 hours ago, a 'boot log' is available, indicating driver load difficulties.

From: No safe_mode, and a blank_screen,
To: An available 'boot_log', which seems to indicate some progress, somewhere.

No posts regarding how he got to where he is now.

Isn't the Boot_log only available by enabling in 'Safe_mode' ?

Amedeus seems to be asking for help, while not answering any questions requesting information from him.
And, not providing enough detail as to what he has done, between posts.

So, exactly what is "the problem", right now ?

So, exactly what is "the problem", right now ?
Is Safe mode available ? It is not. Just the blank screen with cursor.
Is there more than a 'blank-screen' w/normal click ? Clicking doesn't do anything.
Where did the boot_log come from ? From the boot options screen from C:> (where one selects the OS to boot, which is Win 7 on a single partition disk) I selected boot logging. Am able to pull up the ntbtlog.txt file which is what was posted.
Did the 'in-the-blind' info help ? The suggestions you offered early on were helpful. Thanks for those. I've been remiss in posting what I have done so far but, so far, nothing has helped get me back to where I belong! If and when I do find what works I will definitely post.
I did also run CHKDSK /r which found and corrected some errors on the drive. But, that did not solve the problem.
Also ran the fixes suggested for the MBR which appears to be fine as it is at least loading drivers.
One question is what would the next driver be that is not loading? Possible that is corrupt?
Another suggestion I haven't tried but will is to use the backup config file to overwrite the current one (after backing up the current one). Not too sure about that tactic.
BTW, for those suggesting I reinstall, I may get there. But, being the somewhat stubborn German/Irish person I am that point hasn't yet arrived. Hopefully in all of this some others may find a kernal of help in this. My SO gets a bit annoyed with this. But, as somewhat of a techie herself, she does understand. Just have to be careful of her Sicilian nature on occasion

Came accross this thread looking for a fix for a customers pc . I ended up removing the hard drive and loading it into a drive enclosure on another pc. i went to where the hive is stored. c:\windows\system32\config

inside there is a restore directory with the hive files , default sam security software. i copied these files an pasted them over the current ones in the config directory. PC boots into windows fine now.

i know this is probably considered Necroing a thread but i figured since it didnt sound like it was resolved i would register and put my fix as a possible solution for others. good luck
