Hi there,

My Main Windows 7 PC is failing to install Windows Update KB4022719 (June 2017 Security quality monthly roll up of Windows 7 X64 based systems) with error code 80073701. I have downloaded and run / installed the Windows update readiness tool KB947821. I have also tried the updated Windows update readiness tool KB2966583. I also downloaded KB4022719 as a standalone update msu file, but this also fails to install the update.
I have attached my CBS directory as a zip file, minus a number of cab files which were in the original CBS directory named:-

CbsPersist_20170623080625.cab
CbsPersist_20170623130211.cab
CbsPersist_20170623131719.cab
CbsPersist_20170623133711.cab
CbsPersist_20170624113408.cab

I have run sfc /scannow, which found no errors

I also ran the command "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth", which created the %windir%\logs\CBS\Checksur.log.

Please help.?

Hi Ravdave,

im NOT surprised lookin at those logs
You have well over 100 missing parts of various windows updates.

Its been caused by AVG, as reported in your CBS log, uninstall it
note DISM is not fully W7 compliant waste of time running it
SURT kb947821 does NOT appear to have run/completed - no log in CBS where it should be

There are in reality too many to fix.

your best bet is a clean install.

However
looking at your system specs im a bit confused
your stating OEM on a custom install-- system builder i take it and you should have a set of discs
Have you??, they should have supplied you with them
could you run this tool copy/paste the output

Hi Roy,

I bought 2 PC's from Overclockers.co.uk with the exact same specs, with Windows 7 pre-installed by them. (The other PC is working fine I believe as the KB4022719 installed fine on that PC. I queried them when I received my pC's as to where were the recovery/installtion disks. They replied at the time (2013) that they were not allowed to provide them and that I should find an iso image via Google. They would not provide links to me for this. At the tiime I found what I thought was the right iso, and got a friend to burn it to DVD. I tested that it would boot at the time but did not do any other checks. I found out the other week that this version is not "compatible" with my installation as after booting with this DVD and selecting "Repair" to get the repair tools menu up it said "Not compatible with his version" or something like that. I then contatced Overclockers.co.uk again this week and their response was that they would have pre-installed Windows 7 Home Preium 64bit OEM version, and that I would need to find my own DVD with this version on it, or create my own from an ISO downloaded from "somewhere". Not very helpful, so at the moment I do not have a DVD with which to re-install.

AVG Free is installed on my other PC's which have no problem with Windows Updates.

I have some additional information which may be of some help perhaps. On this PC with the Win Updates issue, about 5 weeks or so ago, it installed some windows updates. I shut the PC down and re-started it. I then decide to perform a disk cleanup (including system files I think) as there was about 14Gb to save (I hadn't done a cleanup for a year or two). The disk clean finished and I shut the machine down. The next time I booted up I was suprised to see "configuring updates please wait". The percentage went up to 100% and it then appeared to get stuck there for half an hour. (I now know I should have just left it and it would have eventually completed after a few hours). I though it had crashed so I powered the PC off and on again. This time it got stuck at 35%. I then tried to boot into safe mode, which it did, but it then re-started and this time stated "Reverting please do not turn off". This time I left the PC alone and it eventually came back and booted into the desktop about 2 - 3 hours later. The desktop then locked up, so I powered the PC off and re-booted. It then came back into windows as normal. I ran sfc /scannow which said no problems and also the Windows Update Troubleshooter program from Microsoft, which fixed a few things, but did not give a complete ok at the time. I then went to Windows Update which said "Never", and ran it, and at the time it came back and said no important updates, and about 70 ish optional updates were available, so I assumed it was all fixed.

Some updates have since been automatically installed on 18 June, but KB4022719 failed.

I have run the MGA tool as you requested and the output is as follows:-

Hi RavDave,

Yep shutting down during updating was more than likely the cause.

Thanks for the link Roy,

I've looked at the ISO file you provided using Winrar, and examined the content of the ei.cfg file in the sources directory of the iso. The content is as follows:-

[EditionID]
HomePremium
[Channel]
Retail
[VL]
0

I thought that as my installed version is OEM that the [Channel] entry is supposed to be "OEM" and not "Retail" in this file. Would this not mean that the installation key on the label on my PC would not work with this version ..?? (The guy from Overclockers.co.uk did state that I would need an OEM version..??).
I have read somewhere that the only difference was this entry on the ei.cfg file...??

If so do I need a different iso file (an OEM one), or is there a way of editing this one so that [Channel] states "OEM", such that the file contents would then look like this:-

[EditionID]
HomePremium
[Channel]
OEM
[VL]
0

Or is this information a complete fallacy...???

Hi Ravdave,

The type of install is actually governed by the key itself.
System builder although classiified as OEM are not strictly true OEMs and are actually closer to a retail key.
The main difference being they are NOT SYSTEM LOCKED - NSLP as yours is, ie transferrable. OEM's are tied to the original motherboard SLP, its all technicallities really.
from your report
Description: Windows Operating System - Windows(R) 7, OEM_COA_NSLP channel

The ISO link i sent you is valid for your OS, and NO changes need to be made to it.

Thanks for the info Roy, looks like I've got some more backing up of data to do etc, before re-installing.

So when I re-install, I just use the same key off the label on the back of the PC as when I originally received it. Will I have to do any other activation afterwards (can't remember if I had to do this originally or not, but don't think I had to), or will the original key be sufficient..??. (No hardware has been changed on my PC).

Just as a secondary naive question, ....I suppose that attempting to copy files related to Windows Update (whatever and wherever they may be located) from my second PC to my main PC (they are meant to be identical systems after all) to resolve the problem would be too difficult/risky or would plain not work...???

Thanks Roy,

Looking at the mentioned "Thash's instructions", after re-instaling Win 7, and sorting out the few manual application of the mentioned KB updates would I still need to perform step 7 "Windows Update Reset - option 3" which is "To Reset and Re-register Windows Update Components AND Reset Update History in One Easy Click "..?
