Solved Windows update ("KB3024777")

I have this same problem. To give full details, there are NO specific operational problems that I can detect. What happens is that KB3024777 is listed in the updates to be run. When I turn the computer off, that update tries to run - and fails. The comp then turns off as expected. The only reason I know something is wrong is that every single day I find an update waiting to be done - and it is the same one. This means that turning the computer off takes extra time and presumably resources. I have now tried to run the update directly from the list, and it returns Failed - as the list of updates now tells me it has failed since its first attempt on 12-Dec. On 10-Dec, the broken Update that KB3024777 was supposed to fix, KB3004394, WAS installed, so according to what I am reading, I do need to run KB3024777.

I have no idea how to manually remove KB3004394 but even if did, the problem I have is that this KB3024777 is still going to sit there forever trying to load every time I turn the comp off. Presumably there may be problems doing any other updates too, as this one will take priority and Fail first.

I know very little about Updates and frankly it would be difficult to underestimate my interest in them. I just obediently let them get loaded like a trusting Microsoft user, but they seem to have let me down badly with this one.

There seems to be some implication from my peripatetic Googling that updates scheduled to be run can simply be removed ('Hide'?), and when I look at the schedule it has a checkbox next to it, but the checkbox is greyed and I can't see any way to turn it on. I think this comp is set up without administrator privileges - courtesy of an over-enthusiastic repairer at some stage. So possibly the ability to remove the update from the schedule is only an administrator privilege.

So ... have Microsoft now doomed me to eternally and fruitlessly attempting to load KB3024777 every single time I turn the computer off?

You can uninstall KB3004394 by going to Installed Updates and finding it the listing there - right-click on it and you should be offered the Uninstall option.
Once it's uninstalled. KB3024777 will no longer be offered if you do a Check for Updates.

If you can't find it there, or the Uninstall option doesn't work,

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Martin, I have exactly the same issue and it has nothing to do with administrator rights. I am getting that update prompt every single time I start the comp. Needless to say it is very annoying.

Thank you for Post #2. I deleted KB3004394 and now KB3024777 is no longer offered in Check for Updates. Problem solved. Thanks.
