XP Mode, sharing files on guest machine

Kari, I have done some digging around and found that before an XP computer to be detected and appear on a network map it must have installed LLTD protocal. I do not know yet if I have that or not on XP Mode.

I have also looked into "Homegroup" and found that it only works with other Win 7 computers. Typical !

I am needing to have at this stage in a closed "network group" my Win 7 computer, my XP Mode, my Mac and my HTC Desire mobile phone, with ability to add more on later. However I also need to allow at least 2 other computers to have access to the internet through the same router, while not having access to my own closed network. This may make my needs more clear and I will keep searching for the answers at my end.

XP Mode is by default, straight after installation, able to connect to same workgroup as its Windows 7 host. There's no need to additional downloads or installs.

A Windows 7 computer as for instance your host MUST belong to a workgroup (or domain), and CAN additionally belong to a homegroup. Only other Windows 7 computers can join the homegroup where your host machine belongs, but all other computers can join the same workgroup. In other works, homegroup and workgroup can be "on" at the same time, and depending on the OS on other computers the sharing between them is made by choosing either homegroup or workgroup.

There are several tutorials on the net on how to work around this, how to join homegroup from other than Windows 7 operating systems. This is one of the best I've seen.

Following the steps mentioned in my earlier posts in this thread (posts #2 and #6), you should be able to join the XP Mode to your network. To assure I'm not giving your false information, I just created a second XP Mode virtual machine and following steps told on those two posts, had no problems to join the guest to the workgroup and start sharing with host straight after first launch.

Your wish to create two workgroups on the same router, I'm still waiting some real network gurus to take a look at this thread. I have already posted a request for help.

Kari

I understand from what you say that Homegroup is a Win7 subgroup of the Workgroup. Workgroup is the one that all computers in the Local Area Network are members of. But I cannot see any other computers in my network picture, except the computer I am using at the time to look at it. It is as though all computers exist individually, all connected directly to the router, without seeing any other associated computer. There does not appear to be a Workgroup as such. I am missing something simple I think, but cannot put my finger on it.

Sorry this is to difficult for me to do in a hurry Kari. While in the process of getting the image I pushed the wrong X in the tpo right hand corner and shutdown XP mode with the forum connection etc etc and it all went belly up. So I will just have to type in the answers for you.

XP Mode: Networking Network Adapter:1 Shared Networking (Nat)

Please note: I did change it to the other choice (Realtek RTL... Family PCI-EGigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS.2) as you instructed, but I immediately lost internet connection with XP Mode. Local area connection stated limited or no internet connection. When I changed it back it restored the internet access to XP Mode.

I will investigate and try it.

Problem: I tried changing the network connection to NIC to confirm I was giving you the true picture. I lost my internet as mentioned but have also lost the toolbar at the top of the desktop now. So do not know how to get back to the network settings in XP Mode to change it back. I'm lost again.

Notice that the tutorial I linked in my last post shows how to install and enable integration on a Windows 7 virtual machine running on Virtual PC, but as XP Mode is just another Virtual PC machine, the procedure is exactly the same. Just follow the tutorial.

Have you installed the integration components? If so, are integration features enabled? (Windows Virtual PC Integration Features - Install, Enable, and Disable)

I do not know how I can do this now without the toolbar at the top of the desktop with the Tools menu.
I do not want to have to start this process all over again. Is there some other way I can get to the Networks area to change it back to NAT which I think has caused the problem ? :(

Is your toolbar gone missing again? That's one thing I can not understand...

To fully be able to network XP Mode with the host / workgroup, you need to use the host's network controller and integration components have to be installed and enabled.

Yes I had the desktop Toolbar at the top and everything was working in that regard. But I think it was when I changed the network setting to the Realtek NIC it seemed to go wrong.

I was also playing with paint and trying to learn about saving images etc while I as waiting for you to post again and crossed out of it wrongly again. When I next saw the screen it was without the toolbar, and I do not know how to get it back. There should be a way around it as the toolbar was visible and working OK before. It is just a setting somewhere that needs to be changed back.

Can I get to XP Mode Network Settings another way ?

I have tried to take an image of my XP Mode desktop now but it will not include the small blue toolbar with only

Drawing pin image, Action, USB, Ctrl+Alt+Del minimize/maximize/close

There is a just whole lot of blue with Recycle bin, IE, Win Media Player in top left corner and
Start at bottom with the task bar empty, except for a few items in the bottom right corner.

I remember only having 2 choices in the box when I clicked the tools button, so Integration features must have been installed already, as I think this webpage says somewhere is automatic with XP Mode installation.

2. To Install Integration Components
NOTE: You would only have this option if you have not installed the Integration Components in this specific virtual machine yet. If you have, then you will have the option to either Enable Integration Features or Disable Integration Features instead.A) Click on Tools on the virtual machine menu bar, and click on Install Integration Components. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: You may need to press CTRL+ALT+Left Arrow to move the mouse pointer out of the virtual machine to click on the menu bar.

One more try. This is how to make a Virtual PC virtual machine (for instance XP Mode) and the host computer to see each other to share folders.

First, shut down (do not hibernate) XP Mode. Follow steps 4 and 5 in this post to learn how to change the default closing action of XP Mode.

When XP Mode is closed, change the network adapter to that of your host computer, Realtek you mentioned?

Run XP Mode. Do exactly as told in this tutorial to connect it to your network. The screenshots in the tutorial are not from XP Mode but the procedure is exactly the same.

I'm sorry Kari, I sense the frustration in your post. I have been trying to solve this for days.

When XP Mode is closed, change the network adapter to that of your host computer, Realtek you mentioned?

Do you mean change the network adapter on the HOST PC WIN 7 to "Realtek.....", after XP Mode is closed ?
If this is so please tell me how to do this in Win 7 ?

I have 2 choices I know of for getting out of XP Mode. The X at the top right hibernates XP Mode.
On the Start menu, I have LOG Off button which I also think hibernates it.
Is there another way to close it down Please.

Kari both post links you have sent me require me to use the Tools drop down menu, in the top toolbar of XP Mode. But I do not have this toolbar anymore, unless this action above will get it back on the XP desktop.
