Apologies everyone, I misread thelma's search report and thought I saw five files, yes it's only four. It's getting late for me and my brain had a typo. Good job on that screenshot thelma.

thelma, if you read my last post I threw out some suggestions and I'd like to wait for replies. If one of the other members validates them go ahead and try them.

Do you have a windows 7 disk? I'll be up for just a bit longer, I'm going with the wife for her PET scan in the morning.

Anak, I understand you are tired an wish also to keep things here. Thelma is good on what she is doing, but if she is not getting errors and she has sound out of external speakers, the fix has got to be something simple. You know the best practice is KISS/ Keep It Simple Stupid/ we can't see here sound and hardware settings or at least I havent seen hide nor hair of that in any of this thread or the previous one. Remote assistance or teamviewer might get this fixed in 2 minutes.\

Hello Anak,

I hope it went well today, been thinking of you.

Today was a big clean day for me, house and car ( The car was without dog hair for about an hour ) I leave tomorrow early for the Provence, to help a mate out.

My Windows 7 disk is there, I hope to bring it back ( if I can find it, All my stuff is stored there. )

I thought I had it here, but I took the good DELL disk but the wrong Windows ( XP ) with me.

Cy, I see if I can do some of the stuff you asked me tonight, but I doubt it ( been invited to eat at friends) then an early night for an early start tomorrow. ) Sunday here so no trucks on the Autostrada in Italy and the Peage in France so will do it in one day.

From Monday evening, I will probably be back online.

We need to try and get to a baseline with your machine. I've been with you for some of your other problems, like updates disappearing and the Language switching on you, but this thread has taken us far and wide so, I would like to know where you would like to turn next.

Sounds like you may have not resolved the "Sounds Problem"; If you want to try and solve that okay, but I'm thinking it maybe a deterrent to forging ahead, you still have your external speakers so, if it is okay with you, let's hold off on that for awhile. Okay?

In your absence I have been going through the files you uploaded from the dm-log-collector and I found not only a discrepancy with your startup file, but also a wi-fi driver.
Right now my main concern is your HOSTS and Startup files being blank. if you go back to my post #78 you will see that my concern is that you have remnants of various anti-malware programs on your machine, and I believe the first order of business is to clean your machine of those remnants.

Hi Thelma, welcome home.

I found indications of two anti-malware programs still on your machine (avast and avira) and from earlier conversation I understand you use hitman pro (HMP) and Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), and on occasion malwarebytes (mbam) is that still correct? If it is and you are not using avast or avira anymore they need to be uninstalled and there are two ways to do that:

Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features and look for them, since they both start with the letter 'A' they should be near the top of the list. Right click on one and click on uninstall; Then do the other.

If you do not see them you will have to follow the instructions found at the links provided below. It's pretty much going to programs and features but it can be complicated especially for avira, avira posts a link for manual removal but avast does not so, if you need help post back here.

Remember to restart your machine after removal.

Note

If you can not find them you will have to reinstall them and then do an uninstall from programs and features. Let us hope they are there. :zip:

Do you mind me asking things before I do your instructions? Only that now I can think of it and later I will forget.

Both Avast and Avira are not in my programs and Features because I removed them ( I thought ) From my laptop.

When I don't want a program anymore ( free antivirus I used to change after a while because I was told, they all work different and get sort of blind for some problems ) I used to uninstall them first from my programs and features, if possible with their own de-instal program. Now, when you click right on a program on this page, it sometimes gives you the possibility to uninstall or change and sometimes not, why is that?

Then after that I would use Revo to search for bits left in the register and Ccleaner.

With iTunes ( could not stand that ) I spend hours searching through the register with " edit > find> delete.
I think I got really all of iTunes away, so does that mean, that if there is nothing left over in the register, it's really gone? Clean ?

Do I understand it right that those are all not the good ways of getting rid of something completely?

You see, this way I also learn not to use bad habits anymore, I need to understand!

I follow your instructions tomorrow morning when I am fresh, and report on that.

All good programs come with their own installer and uninstaller that the Windows operating system (OS) works with to initially install a program onto your machine and the OS will invoke the uninstaller when you decide to remove the program, it is best to use Programs and Features first and if that fails try the programs uninstaller.

I have the same uninstall or change behaviour when I right click on some programs in Programs and Features there is also a third option, Repair.

Uninstall does what it says, uninstalls the program.

Change will give you the option to add or remove (change) various features of a program.

Repair gives the option to repair damage to a program if it is not working properly.

I would say yes, but with a caveat; Since the uninstall was done manually one can never be absolutely sure that all the remnants were removed because some program files do not reflect the programs name or it is intertwined with other OS Processes and Services.
It is always best to allow Programs and Features or the uninstaller to do the uninstall because every folder and file that was installed is in a list of where it was installed and, Programs and Features or the uninstaller will follow that list during removal.

The registry editor, Revo and CCleaner are the three best tools I would and have used, but be careful and only delete what you are searching for because some file names can be misleading, if you are unsure ask before you do.

It is never a good thing to use brute force, but sometimes if you really want the files gone, you have to rip them out.

Okay, but let's try an easy way first, instead of the instructions in my last post try this instead: ESET AV Remover | support.eset.com/kb3527/, download the 64bit version for your machine.

According to the instructions it should find any leftovers of either avast or avira antivirus program. When its done searching it will offer a list to pick from, just don't pick hitman pro or microsoft security essentials if they're there because you want to keep them, right?
If you are unsure what to pick, post a screenshot, if it doesn't offer any picks we will have to try another way.

Unfortunately the eset tool was not able to pick up on the remnants so you can remove it if you want to. I do not see Eset listed in your screenshots of Programs and Features (P&F), did you take the screenshots of P&F before or after you ran Eset?

If before look again in P&F remove from there.

If after and it is still not in P&F it means it ran as a portable program and you can safely send it and its shortcuts (the one on your desktop and taskbar) to the Recycle Bin.

If you remove using P&F it should not be necessary to restart after the removal, but it would not hurt.

They both have tools to download and ask to run Safe Mode to uninstall.

You might want to print the instructions especially for Avira.

Yes, it is correct.

Why? While logged into your Thelma (a standard) user account, it will allow you to download any Folder, File or Program but, it has insufficient privileges to open certain Folders, Files or install programs.

You have two ways to open those certain folders and files or install programs; Which do you use number one or two?

1.) You could log off of the Thelma account and log back in with the Administrator account like you did one week before or,

2.) You can right click on the folder, file or program and use the 'Run as Administrator' context menu entry that Windows provides as an option to changing accounts. If that option is not there you have no choice, you have to log-off 'Thelma' then log back in as administrator.

Sometimes after you click on 'Run as Administrator' it will tell you, you still have insufficient privileges but it will give you the option to elevate so click on Yes or OK then it will ask if you really want to open or run through the UAC click on Yes again.

Sometimes in this process you may see an Open File - Security Warning, this will show you how to unblock what you want to open: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/124367-open-file-security-warning-unblock-file.html But, heed the warning, only open if you trust what you are about to open.

The only way to avoid all of this is to always log in to your Administrator account, but then, that becomes a security issue.

That's all understood and I did the 2 screenshots of programs and features after I used the Eset AV remover.

I will now run those 2 installations for Avira and Avast ( separately ), look in the programs if it is properly installed, then use uninstall feature.

I found ( but did not do anything ) in the register under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > Controle Set 002 > Services >

1) Anti-Vir Mail Service ( Avira)

2) asw SP (Avast )

Then you can drag and drop all that Eset stuff to the recycle bin.

Do not forget to restart your machine after each uninstall.

I found ( but did not do anything )

That's good.
After the uninstalls go back into the registry and see if you can find them again.

Did a massive answer, then clicked wrong and all was gone: shock:. Never mind, it all came down to the fact that even in safe mode, with all my anti-virus switched off it did not work at al for Avast and perhaps a bit for Avira.

I had a look afterwards in the register and nothing had disappeared.

Shall I try to clean manually?

PS I put my anti-virus back on.

Also, it is weekend for you, so please take your time, you doing this all in your own free time and it is much, much appreciated
