Because the user interface which works with least problems for turning off startup programs is msconfig>Startup. Services.msc is almost exclusively the province of System, and is already edited to the bone with Win7.

You may solve your problem by removing AVG and replacing it with Avast 5. If not, run Avast's boot scan for deepest scan.

Factory Restore. PC is connected via ethernet.
Uninstalled Norton Trial.
Installed:
Avast
Disabled Windows Defender
MS Office
Firefox
Canon Wireless Printer.

No issues.
Again in morning, boot takes well over 10 minutes and blue screens.

restart in Safe Mode (really quick)
Select boot scan in Avast.

Hardisk is working but no signal to monitor - left it for several minutes and now about to force shutdown :(
Functioned as usual thourghout the day

Actually, as I see that the hard drive light is sporadic, indicative of good activity, not static, maybe the option I chose

All hard drives
System files
Startup

Will continue to run overnight. I'm no worse off, just find it odd that there is no signal to the monitor, whereas it was previously showing file by file progress at a command prompt type screen...

I have a DVD as part of the recovery/repair disk creation, as well as about 6 other disks as part of recovery image creation.

System is 2 months old, but best buy will charge a restocking fee. I probably need to call them and maybe also HP :(

Did a Win7 installation DVD come with the computer. Doubtful unless it's a business computer. If it's only a Factory Recovery Disk then you get the bloatware reinstalled as well.

If it's under warranty I would call tech support which is included for the first year, along with a full replacement warranty.

No DVD came w the PC.

Will do. I ran full computer avast scan last night and woke up to a succesful completion.

However, the default power saving mode is set to turn monitor off in 10 mins and sleep in 20 minutes. Monitor remained on and PC was clearly awake.

The #1 culprit blocking sleep is display adapter. Update in Device Manager to latest cued in optional Windows Updates, from the Support Downloads webpage for your computer model, or from the Device's maker. You may need to roll it back to a previous version - you can see all installed adapters on Display adapter>Driver>Update Driver>Browse my computer>Let me pick from a list.

Check also the performance log to see what devices are failing at time of sleep: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...-lags-every-couple-seconds-2.html#post1131640

I believe you said you have a backup image. If sleep was working or the install was working better overall at time image was made, you may want to restore from that image: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/675-system-image-recovery.html

If these don't help, add it to the list for tech support as they need to get your computer running correctly or replace it within the first year - ideally with enough time to fully shake out the replacement.

Ok, updated the display driver.

The long run ot only happens in the morning; I'll check again tomorrow, and since I did a restore already, System Image Recovery may be my last resort (I also have the repair disk, but that is probably the same as repair selection offered on the PC F8 options)?

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/668-system-recovery-options.html

I'd use the Repair CD if you have it because F8 Advanced Boot Tools run from the same disk as problem install, hence CD/DVD is a more stable platform for repair or reimaging.

Well, once again, I shutdown and restarted several times last night, no problems.

This morning, it took long to boot again, and Avast was turned off when windows came up, I had to turn it on manually.

I have a Repair Disk, that I manually created a few weeks ago; I suppose my next step is to try it, and if I experience the same problem tomorrow morning, I will do a full image restore with the 6 DVD's I created.

Even Event Viewer is taking a long time, and is there anywhere specific that will tell me what was taking so long this morning? :(

Check the Administrative View and Performance logs: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...-lags-every-couple-seconds-2.html#post1131640

There is a new startup manager Soluto in beta that is coming along quite nicely and can map your entire startup with tips and buttons for what can be Delayed or Paused (turned off at startup until you open the program). I recommend trying it, then advancing if necessary to the tool the pro's use which I posted above.

7009: A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the avast! Antivirus service to connect.

7000,7009,7022,7009,7009,7009,7000,7001 follow, all related to the Service Control Manager

Solutions I have read is to increase the timeout period in registry, but that doesn't make senses to me?

how do i export to file as an attachment?

could it also be my DHCP attempting to get a new internet connection in the morning? (ethernet connected)

HP support thinks it might be related to my wireless Canon MP495 printer and print spooler, so I deleted the printer altogether and will assess tomorrow morning.

They also suggested resetting the bios, which I will do, but I didn't touch the bios, so not sure what a reset will do (there is no current newer bios as well).

Uninstall Avast and try MS Security Essentials. They are pretty much interchangeable in terms of lightweight and effective. I often swap them if one is causing a snag.

That's where I started! Deleted Norton Trial, installed MSE, deleted MSE, replaced with Avast per your earlier post :)

Now I'm told to run the HP Smart Drive Test from BIOS options which will run for 81 minutes...

I'd go along with HP as they decide whether to RMA parts or the whole machine. You will learn a lot about troubleshooting your computer and how these OEM's work.

Running a drive test means they are focusing on HD as a possible candidate for RMA. If this doesn't work to your liking, you can press them to RMA the entire machine at any point along the way.

A reasonable goal with this is to get the RMA returned and shaken out to know that you've got a keeper well before your one-year warranty runs out.

I actually doubt it is a hardware issue. Memory tests passed. Hard Drive test passed, no issues. Avast full Boot Scan also passed, no issues.
Reset BIOS to default (even though I didn't change anything there before anyway)
Deleted Canon MP495 Wireless Printer.
Ran CCCleaner, and installed Soluto.

Not sure it makes sense to go back to MSE, but I can boot tomorrow morning, and if I experience the same problem, can try that, but would have to suspect it would be something else.
