Sharing between Windows 7/Windows XP -- going nowhere

Here's my situation...

I've got two computers, one in my bedroom (Windows 7 Professional) and an HTPC in my living room (Windows XP Professional [SP3]). My Win7 PC also has all my data storage and I want to ultimately be able to stream my music and movie collection from that computer on to my Living Room PC (connected to my big screen TV).

These computers are both connected to the same wireless network.

I've gone through all the drives on both systems right clicked, enabled sharing, given full permission, etc.

However, while on the living room XP computer, if I navigate to Network Places, there are no computers to be found. It doesn't even see the Windows 7 system. While on the Windows 7 system, I can see the Windows XP computer and the drives that I've shared, however when I go to certain folders, I get a message that says I don't have permission.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Hi steve and welcome

I can almost bet you are using "homegroup" for networking. If you are win 7's homegroup is for win 7 only environments. In mixed environments "workgroup" model gives easier sharing, foaster downloads, etc. You can test it yourself. Just create a new network using 'workgroup' if you sharing works you can kill IPv6, and homegroup

Let us know if you need help

Okay, part of the problem was the homegroup.

Now both computers can see each other and all their drives. However, I still can't access most of the folders even though I've got all the permissions set to full control for every drive.

My advanced sharing options match what chev65 has posted (at least on the Windows 7 machine).

In your workgroup, why do you got doubles?

did you check your firewall... that plays a big part in it too...

That is because he hasn't left the Homegroup yet most likely so it appears that two networks have been created.

Thats crazy, I've never had that happen...

I know that most people do't have one in their own house but i just turned on Homegroup... sharing just with the server.... just one central location. Makes it easier for me to do that.

How do you have yor system in yoru house/

The two networks show up here in your screen shot lower left side of the picture. It shows dual livingroom and dual steve that means that you inadvertently created a second network.

Maybe try leaving the Homegroup again or something because this is probably creating a conflict with Windows.

after a reboot, the dual networks are gone.

I still get the permissions error on both systems. Also, on Windows XP, I have to run the network setup wizard every time I reboot; After I run it and click a few buttons, it sees everything and shares everything (though I still can't access the lion's share of it from the Win7 machine).

This is so frusturating. I wish I had 2 licenses of Win7 and could just use homegroup because that worked flawlessly when I was using the beta editions on both systems.

if you wold like to do remote desktop and i can check your configuration one by one with you. i'll be more than happy to do that for you....

Remote doesn't mean full access to your computer...
just means the desktop unless you allow me full.

but at least i can see what your doing and whats on screen... going on three pages now and i see your going no where so i am just offering some tech support one step higher
