Enable test mode to solve USB problems?

A USB 3 device can be plugged into either a 2.0 or 3.0 port and it will work
A USB 2 device can ONLY be plugged into a 2.0 port.
Pardon.. but just a small footnote

USB 3.0 is backward compatible. A USB 2.0 device will work in a USB 3.0 port (but will run at 2.0 speeds, of course). As to why Crabby reported the mouse worked in USB 3.0 at one point? Crabby, might you have, in fact, put it in a USB 2.0 port? Otherwise, it remains a mystery to me since the USB 3.0 drivers have never installed

I'm absolutely sure I had it plugged into a USB3 and it worked but stopped working after I plugged it into the only USB2 port on my computer.
Did you see the device manager screen shot I just posted?

I don't know why I had it backwards sooooo many times.

hold on - try one more restart - disable DSE (or did you on the last one?)

If another restart / disable DSE doesn't solve both USB2 and USB3, time for the hail Mary.
Uninstall USB3.0 device / remove software
restart - disable DSE
is the USB 2.0 device back?

The key for this exercise to ALWYS disable DSE on every boot until this gets a permanent solution where you don't have to disable DSE.

We're close, very close.

I am cautiously optimistic. All the USB ports are working! DSE still disabled.

And your mouse works in any port?

There's still housekeeping and after looking at your C:\ drive, more than I expected. No big deal ... we can relax doing that work ..... as long as the USB devices stick!

Another reboot will be the acid test for stickiness - this time you do not want to disable DSE (I know I said.... but this is the test for normal operation)

The mouse works on every port. I assume I will have to keep disabling DSE every time I reboot.
Thank you so much for getting this back up for me. You are a prince and a gentleman. You, too, Jerry.

Now I am going to bed and will worry about the other stuff tomorrow.

Umm, yes and no.

Tomorrow, I want to make sure that a normal boot doesn't lose the USB devices.
So on the next boot, do NOT disable DSE.

If the devices still work - great!

If not, one more cycle through the process using the Intel driver will hopefully fix this once and for all.
I'll write that up tomorrow and post it.

Tomorrow try the normal reboot.
- get a good night's rest tonight - you deserve it.

Thanks for keeping me honest Jerry - I think I corrected (struck) all of my erroneous 2.0 / 3.0 statements.

All USB ports are working, the mouse works in any port.
This was accomplished by disabling Driver Signature Enforcement (DSE) in the Advance Boot options menu (F8 at boot)
and installing the drivers (USB 2.0 worked first, then a few iterations and USB 3.0 worked)

Normal boots up to this point have caused the issue to resurface (one or both drivers are flagged code 52 - unsigned driver)

So now you want to see if the recent work, with the extra steps, corrects the issue in normal operation mode.

Restart the machine normal mode - don't do anything about DSE, just let it boot all the way into Windows
Finger crossed.

Restart and disable DSE this time, hopefully all ports will work without having to go through the uninstall, reinstall cycle.

I have a few ideas to try and get this straighten out (requiring a lot of restarts, uninstalls, reinstalls), but I think it's a good time to try the Intel USB 3.0 driver.

Give me a minute and I'll post that procedure.

:ar: Disconnect all USB devices

I could ask you to try a normal boot, but that's just me being curious.
There is no need to restart.

DSE should still be disabled after the previous boot - that's good for this install.

Correction:
Uninstall the USB 3.0 driver
run DriveCleanup
Restart - disable DSE

Download the Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver
Press or click Save as
Change the save location to your Downloads folder
Keep the file name supplied in the field

Press [Open folder] when the download completes
Double click the Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver zip folder
Select Extract all
Accept the default field entries

A new Explorer window should open showing the extracted files
Double click setup to install the driver

Wait for Windows to think about the new driver - you should see the Driver Software Installation window
- Please a screen shot if it is NOT a successful install

Restart in normal mode - go straight to Windows, without any changes to DSE

and.... does everything work?

Good catch, it might work without uninstalling it, but let's make it as clean as possible

Uninstall the USB 3.0 driver
run DriveCleanup
Restart - disable DSE

After the restart: DevMgr should show the USB 3.0 device in Other devices (code 28 - no driver)
Then install the Intel driver.

Thanks for your keen eyes and attention to detail. I changed post# 279 to include that step.
