For anyone who would like to tweak IE9, there are several websites offering various tips and tricks. This is just one such site:

Internet Explorer 9 - Tips, Tricks & Tweaks | The Windows Club

Most of the tweaks involve editing the registry so I'd recommend either backing up the registry or making a system image just in case something goes wrong.

Ok

I have had no end of probs with my IE9 - not least that one has to use that 32bit for Flash.

Have also heard that Firefox is ahead on the security side of things - but I stand to be corrected - but at least I find it faster.

firefox doesnt have a sandbox so looking at it logically it would seem IE is more secure. Although IE is a bigger target due to its userbase.

I can confirm the dll wrapper works a treat for cleartype disabling. It doesnt actually overwrite existing files either I assume they just overide the system files by been in the same dir as the exe.

For me tho smartscreen filter remains down tho in both IE8 and IE9. So its been no big deal for me to disable on the downloads to fix the not commonly download problem.

Not exactly - IE is still broken, and lots of OS components share the IE binaries to do their work. It's not thinking too hard when IE is involved, given how intertwined it is within the whole OS - if IE is still broken, you still have a problem.

Alright, it's so intertwined within the OS that Firefox simply refuses to work anymore... Even after a reinstall! Now I can only use Chrome for browsing, and some internet connected executables won't work... (eg. Youtube Downloader)
I don't even have a Win7 install disc to repair it... Coz my laptop has Win7 OEM...
Seriously, IE shouldn't be a core in Windows 7... Now almost every executable uses IE to connect to the internet...
System Restore, here I come... *sigh*

EDIT:
Btw, found this thing on 'XP was my idea': http://xpwasmyidea.blogspot.com/2011/04/minipost-classic-shell-310-released.html
Brings some options from IE8 back to IE9...

EDIT2:
Uh oh...

I'm doomed...

Actually, IE and Chrome use the same binary (wininet.dll), whereas Firefox is a direct WinSock app. I would guess this is an antivirus/antimalware filter driver issue. What are you using for antivirus and firewall on your installs?

McAfee. Preinstalled with the OS...
Should I remove it? I can get a different Antivirus...

This post is NOT for the purpose of trying to start an argument as to which security product is "the best". It's for informational purposes only to help the OP resolve a situation.

There are several free products available that can be substituted for McAfee for the sole purpose of seeing if your situation is related to an antivirus/antimalware filter driver issue. If you decide to try a different product, use the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool (MCPR.exe) to make sure all remnants of McAfee are removed from your computer.

EDIT: Additional thought. Go to the official IE9 download site and save the appropriate version to your desktop. Disconnect your machine from the internet, turn off McAfee, and see if IE9 will install.

How to uninstall or reinstall supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe)

Among the free and often recommended security tools are Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast, Avira, and Comodo to name just a few. Once McAfee is uninstalled feel free to pick another product and see if it makes a difference in being able to install IE9.

running this on my main desktop now, lower resource usage than IE8 and the fish tank test gets full 60fps even on 1000 fish. Some sites seem to stick on "waiting for" a while tho when loading.
