Make My Computer First icon on Desktop

If you place both the My Computer and User icons on the desktop, the User folder becomes the first icon on restart. WinXP powertoy Teak UI had a fix for this (scroll down to First Icon) "you can use the options on the First Icon page to specify which of these icons you want to appear in the upper-left corner of the desktop"

Any similar tweak or registry adjustment to do the same thing in Win 7?

I would assume that Tweak UI edited the registry to force this behavior. How can I find out what registry settings Tweak UI modified?

I found this post which tells how to do this in XP by editing the value data for SortOrderIndex. When I change the value from the default (48) to 54, I get this error "Cannot edit SortOrderIndex: Error writing the value's new contents"

I tried editing the permissions and I received an Access denied message. Any ideas?

I have my computer, program icons, and personal folder shortcuts on my desktop. I put My computer first, I deleted all the check marks that are shown when you right click on desktop and go to sort by. Everything stays in place.

Upon restart User and My Computer order switches for me.

This article gives instructions that worked with XP. The registry key in question: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}\]
right-click on DWORD value "SortOrderIndex" and click on 'Modify'.

I am unable to modify the value due to permission issues. And I'm unable to give my username (which is an administrator account) Full permissions for this key. Is this locked by the system or can I gain access to it some how?

I tried that as well and access is denied even using the administrator account. I can't edit the permissions or add full control.

Did you try a previous suggestion? Right-click your desktop and uncheck align to grid and any other options. Arrange them on the desktop and reboot. Otherwise try an app that saves your desktop icons:

I tried the uncheck solution. When I reboot, the My Computer and User folders switch placement. I will check out Desktop Icon Save and Restore. But what I would really like to do is to be able to change that registry value that I can't seem to gain full write access to.

Did you try net user administrator /active:yes in an elevated command prompt? Right click cmd and select run as administrator. Set it to no when you are done. Reboot and select admin mode.

Yes I tried that, and I still am unable to modify the registry DWORD value.

In order to give yourself permission to edit these registry keys, you first need to take ownership of them. Click "Advanced" from within the permissions window, then go to the "Owner" tab. Click on your username, you may also wish to pick the option "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects". Once this is applied, you should now be able to give yourself whatever permission you desire.

I'm unable to add myself to the owner tab.

You shouldn't have to add yourself, your account along with the administrator group should already be listed under "Change owner to:". Your account is an administrator account isn't it?

Once you highlight your account and click apply, the "Current owner:" field should change to whatever account you just picked.

Did you try running regedit as an administrator? Right-click on the "Regedit" link (i just started typing it in the run box on the start menu and it automaticly pops it up) and click "Run as administrator".

Here you go.

Click rb: andtype Regedit into the search box. Right-click the program and click on Run as administrator. After providing administrative credentials, the editor will open.
