Make My Computer First icon on Desktop

In order to give yourself permission to edit these registry keys, you first need to take ownership of them. Click "Advanced" from within the permissions window, then go to the "Owner" tab. Click on your username, you may also wish to pick the option "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects". Once this is applied, you should now be able to give yourself whatever permission you desire.
That worked, thank you kindly.

If you place both the My Computer and User icons on the desktop, the User folder becomes the first icon on restart. WinXP powertoy Teak UI had a fix for this (scroll down to First Icon) "you can use the options on the First Icon page to specify which of these icons you want to appear in the upper-left corner of the desktop"

Any similar tweak or registry adjustment to do the same thing in Win 7?

I would assume that Tweak UI edited the registry to force this behavior. How can I find out what registry settings Tweak UI modified?

Right click the desktop... select View... uncheck "Auto-arrange Icons" place them however you like.

Also ASRock ION 330 as HTPC (on XP).
Acer Aspire as GP netbook (on XP).
I tried that as well and access is denied even using the administrator account. I can't edit the permissions or add full control.
Order it yourself, and then right-click on desktop and un-check the properties in the sort-by menu, this menu is what tells the desktop how to arrange the icons, if you have nothing checked, it basically has it on manual sort, rather then auto sort. This should fix your problem. if not, I have no idea how to change it.

Make sure you change the key in regedit and 64bit regisrty (run..."wow64") and reboot (just logging out then back in should do).

I beleive you said you were running 64bit w7 cause there are 2 regisrty's and sometimes if you dont change both it wont work.

If unsuccessfull try changing the key and setting the permissions for both administrator and "System" to read only. Then Reboot or relog-in.

If not try the below work-around's:

Export the Changed entry/key to a .reg file... (R-click your entry and click export)

Make a batch file (.bat) (create .txt and rename to .bat) and use/paste the dos command "REG {IMPORT}{file.reg}"

Ie: "reg import file.reg"

Odviously replace the file.reg with your path/filename

Then place the batch file in your startup folder

more info on the REG command here: MS-DOS reg command help

This "work-around" should help force the regkey at "startup" although you may have to refresh, but if you find a DOS command to "refresh" Desktop paste it in the batch file on a seprate line aswell.

Thats the only things i can think of to help you, but one should work, if not the only was is like above, you will have to manually arange the icons.

Hope this helps

I have my computer, program icons, and personal folder shortcuts on my desktop. I put My computer first, I deleted all the check marks that are shown when you right click on desktop and go to sort by. Everything stays in place.
Upon restart User and My Computer order switches for me.

This article gives instructions that worked with XP. The registry key in question: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}\]
right-click on DWORD value "SortOrderIndex" and click on 'Modify'.

I am unable to modify the value due to permission issues. And I'm unable to give my username (which is an administrator account) Full permissions for this key. Is this locked by the system or can I gain access to it some how?
Opened sysWOW64 via: systemroot%\syswow64
Ran regedit (64) as admin via right click,
Tried to change the above referenced DWORD,
Got this error: : "Cannot edit SortOrderIndex: Error writing the value's new contents."
Also tried to add full control via permissions: "Unable to save permission changes on...Accessed denied"
administrator and SYSTEM are both read only but TrustedInstaller has full control. I cannot add myself on for full control either.

Why can't I gain permissions for this?

A batch file is a text file with commands, just a diffrent extention...

Rclick your desktop or folder, click "new" then "text file"

Rclick the new text file then "rename", rename it to sumthing like "icon.bat"

rclickthe bat file and click "EDIT", dont double click or open it will exicute the file!

then past your DOS commands and save

place the file in C:\Users\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Ok, so what would the DOS command look like? And I assume I set the owner by right click, properties, security and then add full permissions for my username (and I am an admin) Sorry, this DOS cmd stuff is pretty foreign to me

I assumed when you edited the regisrty on the first page of this thread it worked untill you rebooted,. After trying it, i had no luck either, so this isnt really going to work... but ill keep trying, there maynot be a way though... This has got me interested.
