MBR - Restore Windows 7 Master Boot Record

How to Restore the Windows 7 MBR (Master Boot Record)

   Information
If you have been dual booting with Linux, then you probably know one of the Linux boot managers like Grub or LILO has been installed in the MBR of your hard drive. What can you do when you no longer want Linux on that hard drive? This tutorial will show you how to use your 7 DVD and BOOTSECT.EXE to restore the "bootsector code" of the MBR and allow you to begin booting to Windows 7 again.
   Tip
You can use this method to update the bootsector code for Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000 or switch between Bootmgr and NTLDR. Just check the Microsoft TechNet site for the correct command.

Here's How:1. Boot your computer to the Windows 7 DVD (or to a "Repair CD"). At this screen choose to install now.

2. Select your language and click next.

3. Click the button for "Use recovery tools".

4. Then select "Command Prompt".

5. When open, the command prompt will look like this:

6. The command we will use, bootsect.exe, is in a folder (named boot) on the DVD.We need to know what drive letter has been assigned the DVD drive to access the folder.

Code:
Type: [B]diskpart[/B]
and press [B]Enter[/B]

Type: [B]select disk 0[/B] (zero)
and press [B]Enter[/B]

type: [B]list volume[/B]
and press [B]Enter[/B]
In this screen shot, the 7 DVD is letter: G

7. Use your DVD drive letter and

Code:
Type: [B]exit[/B]
and press [B]Enter[/B]

to close Diskpart

Type: [B]G:[/B] (use the letter of your DVD drive)
and press [B]Enter[/B]

Type: [B]cd boot[/B]
and press [B]Enter[/B]

Type: [B]dir[/B]
and press [B]Enter[/B]
to verify that bootcect.exe is there (if you really need to)

8. To restore the "bootsector code":

Code:
TYPE: [B]bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr[/B]
and press [B]Enter[/B]
53601d1251414836-mbr-restore-windows-7-master-boot-record-mbr_19.png

NOTE: If this method fails to restore the MBR, you can try the bootrec command as it is also a tool for repairing the MBR.

9. When completed successfully,

Code:
Type: [B]exit[/B]
and press [B]Enter[/B]
This will close the command prompt window.

10. Now select Shut Down or Restart

11. Then you can reboot your computer into Windows.

Actually, I do need it. It helps make my laptop faster. Without it, it as a very low stability.
Windows 7 is Microsoft's most finely tuned OS to date. There is nothing Tune-up Utilities can do that 7 can't do for itself. Tune-up Utilities only adds another running program to eat up resources. But if you don't want my advice ...

It seems reasonable that one of the programs you installed is causing the symptoms you describe. You could try uninstalling them one by one to see if that is true?

Okay, I will remove it. I am not going to download Speccy as it is in Beta.

Although Speccy claims it is in Beta, there are no problems with it. I use it often, and recommend it to many people, and nobody has reported an issue.

It is entirely your option, though. If you want to get the information yourself, you can run msinfo32 from the start menu.

Good luck!

If you suffer performance problems as a result of removing Tune-up Utilities, I would then suggest you start a new thread here at 7 Forums, in the Performance & Maintenance - Windows 7 Forums section for example, and describe your performance problems and let us diagnose them?

Remove the other new programs one by one to discover if one of them is the cause?

1) Programs like Tune-up Utilities frequently need a reboot to completely remove all their processes. You might try another reboot to see if it is gone.

2) It is not possible to get a screen shot during boot, so you will need to pay attention and make note of the messages, lines of code, whatever so we can have a better understanding of what is happening.

See you Wednesday!!

Cheers!
Robert

Hello Enrique, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums!

If when you see this screen:

mbr_04_a.png

there is no Windows 7 showing, do not worry. Do not stop. You can continue to the next step and choose the "Command Prompt" option.

Cheers!

Robert,

Thank you for your welcome.

I went on with the procedure, everything looks fine, but when I reboot the machine I've get the message "Missing operating system".
After that I've reinstalled fedora 12 with its grbu and I'm able to boot both OSs.

Regards,

Enrique

Sure, Andy. I am happy to help all I can. Can you give me something to work with? Your description was:

"Instead of the "Starting Windows" boot screen, I get a "Loading Files" screen like when you start Safe Mode, even when booting into normal mode. After that, it gives hardware information and then after that it goes to the login screen."

This description is just to vague to base any diagnostic conclusion, except that perhaps it was caused by some software newly installed.

Previously, I asked you to watch carefully as you reboot your computer (perhaps even more than once) and take note of what files are being loaded, what hardware info is being shown, or whatever you can catch and report back here.

When some of my computers boot up, the first screen shows text describing the video card present, then the boot routine that tests memory and searches for hard drives, then a screen showing what has been found by the bios, then the starting windows screen. This is normal. Many computers have a setting in the bios that skips these steps and goes strait to starting windows. So without more input from you, I can't be sure you even have a "problem"?

Cheers!
Robert
