Solved Remove Windows Vista from Dual Boot with Windows 7

Yes, you can do this from within Windows 7.

Must I make the bootable CD for PW? or may I just run the partition wizard while on windows 7? I ask this because I do not have access to a computer that can burn discs right now.

That's why I posted the link to the home version, so it could be installed to Windows 7 and not booted; I just posted the tutorial so you could get an idea of its use.

Last two question
How would I go about changing the drive letter? Windows 7 is on D I want to change the letter to C everytime I try to though it says something about the parameter.

Also how much space should I leave for the Recovery Drive?

No need to change it. When you boot into Windows 7, it will have the C: letter then.

By default, whatever OS you boot into will have the C: letter.

That did not happen. I had deleted the partition Windows Vista was on did a Wipe Clean of it restarted my computer and then in the boot menu it still shows Windows Vista is there but in the Disk Management it is now. What should I do?

Are you booting into Windows 7?

If you also have a Windows 7 entry in the Windows Boot Manager, then the tutorial below will show you how to remove the Windows Vista entry while you have booted into Windows 7.

Okay. Now there is only one entry Windows 7 in the Boot Menu, but the drive letter for Windows 7 is still D: not C: (which it should be on default?)

Windows will not allow the Operating System drive letter to be changed.


You must have installed Windows 7 while you were booted into Vista to have got the letter D: as the Windows 7 drive letter.

You see the "System Active" designation, when Windows is designated as "System" Windows will not allow an OS as "System" to be removed or the drive letter changed; that's the reason you could not just delete the Vista partition while it was "System", it's the way Windows 'protects' itself (to be simplistic).

There is no reason not to run Win7 as D drive. But some users don't like it and reinstall anyway.

If you choose to reinstall and already made your Vista Recovery Disks, then I would consider wiping the Vista Recovery partition to recover the space. It can only run from boot now and may not run anyway. If you really want to keep it you can test running it before you wipe the HD to reinstall to see if it works.
