Slow to start up

231 seconds or 2 minutes 31 seconds?
LOL, that must be on a transylvanian clock. On my clock that is 3 minutes and 51 seconds.

Check for newer driver updates in optional Windows Updates.

Keep everything unchecked in msconfig>Startup and msconfig>Services (after hiding all MS services) except your AV. Check back often.

Tap the performance log and System Resources to gain clues to hangs: troubleshooting steps

Run CCleaner as described earlier followed by boot-time defrag with full Disk Check using Puran free Defragger.

If all else fails use the tool which the Pro's use to trace slow startup: Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace - Windows 7 Forums

It was 231 seconds so yeah 4 mins!!!!

So should I have more than just security on start up or is it ok to leave as is?

There is no reason to add anything back to startup unless you need it to start up with Windows to stand by, like a Messenger waiting to receive messages.

Most other startups are updaters and other bloatware which will run anyway whenever you click on the Program to run it (what a novel idea!). To let them freeload on your resources when you rarely if ever use the Program is wasteful and can allow spying.

If you really want those buggers to be running all the time, you can set them on delayed startup - maybe 2 minutes later. That way their startup does not hold you up and if you have 3 or 4GBs of RAM, they are not in the way (they usually use no CPU time - just sit there for when they are needed. Some sort of caching).

We solve a lot of problems here by uninstalling Commode Firewall. There is no reason to run a 3rd party firewall in Win7 which works perfectly with MSE or Avast, unless you have specific needs.

Well I have never had a problem with my current setup, I use it as my Family are likely to install Viruses or Malware and I don't want them passing through the network to my computer.

I also like it, because it is more aware; and tells you if you want to allow or block certain ports.

Try running awhile without the Commode crapware to see the difference. You can always reinstall it if you must.

The best performance solution for infection-prone usage is Malwarebytes Real Time shield in addition to it's free scan monthly.

Ok. So it's gone straight back to a 4 minute start up

Do what you did before.

Go back to msconfig and uncheck all but antivirus.

If that does not solve it, something else is going on.

If stuff that was unchecked yesterday is checked today, ask yourself what you have done in the intervening time that might have caused that.

Format the computer. Nowadays HP and Dell bring too much crap on their PCs. Oh, and don't get too shabby about the PC being new. Format it, and you'll really love your new machine

So if I create a system image recovery now then go to advanced settings and "use a system image you created earlier to restore your computer" will that now just reinstall the laptop to the way it is now
