Slow to start up

Hey guys, my new laptop takes ages to restart. Any hints or ideas? What is not needed in the start up menu? What programs are safe to unclick in the start menu?

try it with every thing unchecked but your antivirus software. you can always go back and recheck them if needed.

Uncheck everything excepting your AV protection, as member above said and post back results.

Don't touch the processes in task manager unless you like BIG problems. But the startup programs (except AV and those you chose yourself like sidebar) can ALL be unchecked.

If you want a real fast startup and program response, get an SSD. My laptops start in 12 to 16 seconds - all with SSDs.

Your system specs tells us nothing. For all we know, you have a puny antique PC with 512MB of RAM. What's under the hood? A 426 Hemi or a 265 Chevy?

download that little tool and run it. It will cough up number in seconds indicating your restart time.

You can also look in control panel/system/advanced system settings. Look at performance settings. There is a choice there for best performance and another for best appearance. You might run that restart tool with each of those settings to see how they differ.

Exactly what do you have checked in msconfig startup tab when you run the tool?

Run that restart tool and advise of the results.

I don't recognize most of those startup things. Run the tool with those 9 items as is.

Then run the tool again with only Microsoft security checked.

How do the results differ in the two cases?

Keep Microsoft Security and disable all the rest. They are really not needed. If you want, you can keep the pointing device too.

You can also find the boot times here. No need to run a tool.

Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows >
Diagnostics-Performance > Operational

100 is Boot time
200 is Shutdown time

If so, remove all but anti-virus one at a time, and re-run the tool after each removal.

Or remove all but antivirus and then add them back one at a time.

How long with antivirus alone checked?

Process of elimination. The culprit should show up.

My suspicion would be Adobe, but try them all.

You may have only a 5400 rpm hard drive, which has some effect---but you should still be able to cut that time.

Just before Cleaning via CCleaner, run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter.

Then I would download and open CCleaner and use CCEnhancer for more features. Then go to the Clean Tab, Analyze and run the Cleaner. Next go to Tools (NEVER GO TO REGISTRY) and select Startup, select them all and select Disable and then Remove.

Then click on CCleaner's Uninstall Tab and remove anything you don't need or use. Ask here if you are unsure if it is safe to remove or not, or you could Google it.

This guide was intended for Windows XP, but I would ignore Step 2, Step 10, Step 11, Step 16, Step 28, Step 37.

I would next run an SFC Scan and a Check Disk Scan.

The final thing I would do is open MSConfig again, select Boot and select No GUI Boot, this will disable the Boot Animation.

Finally I would use MSE and Malwarebytes to check for Viruses and Malware.

If none of these steps help, please report back.
