Unable to rename "New Folder"

When I download something, I use my "Downloads" folder in Windows 7 Home Premium and then click on the "New Folder" link in the Save File dialog box. However, I can't rename it from "New Folder" to the name of my choice. I do not get any error message, it just will not rename it.

Any ideas?

If you haven't already I would try a quick scan with Malwarebytes.

There are registry keys that keep you from changing things. I had one that kept me from deleting files with Explorer. Even those "delete on next boot" utilities would not work. Malwarebytes found it and cleaned it right off.

Creating and editing folders in the Save File download box is a little bit trickier than actually going into the Downloads folder and doing the same thing.

If you browse to the downloads folder, are you able to change the name of the "New Folder"?

Also, try clicking the text "New Folder" in the Save as box, and wait a second, you should then be able to edit the folder's name right from the Save as box. If after a second of waiting it doesn't highlight the folder name, click it again (not the FOLDER, the TEXT "New Folder")

You might see if the folder download in the tutorial below may be able to fix this for you afterwards. It restores all default associations for folders. You may need to restart to fully apply.

I'm assuming this is with IE, or is it any download?

If IE I'd try Firefox, although the file save dialog is a Windows thing and it should work or be broken the same for any browser. At least one would think so.

I don't really think your posts had anything to do with his question, unfortunately. He can change the name of a New Folder fine in Windows Explorer, BUT, when he downloads a file off of the internet, and clicks save as, in THAT box he creates a folder for the file, but cannot rename it THROUGH THE SAVE AS BOX.

Hopefully this clarifies it a bit, I'm stumped though.

There's so much stuff in the Registry that's not documented, afaik, so that I wouldn't discount anything until at least running a malware scan. On my system a Malwarebytes quick scan takes less than 4 minutes.

Yes, but the registry settings in the "Folder" download will also affect the "Save As" type of boxes as well. It would still be worth a try to see if it may help.

Yes I have tried defaulting the file associations for ZIP files. Restarted PC, went to download a zip and still the folder in the Save Dialog will not rename from New Folder. I have also tried a complete Malwarebytes scan & that found nothing.

As a test, create a new administrator account to see if you have this issue in it as well.

The new account works fine, obviously that points to something on my normal account, do you have any thoughts as to what it may be?

It can be so many possibilities. A simple solution would be to copy all contents of your old account's C:\Users\(user-name) user folders (including hidden AppData folder) into the corresponding new account's C:\Users\(user-name) user folders. This will copy over most of your settings and all shortcuts to your new account. After everything checks out ok for you in the new account, you can delete the old user account while logged in the new one.

I copied everything from the old account to the new one, including system & hidden files and the problem is back again. Would I be best to delete the new account again, setup another one & this time copy the hidden, but not the system, plus all of the data?
