I am running Win 7 Home Premium, 64 bit on an Asus Zenbook U31A. I am having trouble with Windows Updates. KB2676521 and KB2813170 seemingly reinstall themselves daily. When I manually run Windows Update, I receive the Error Code 80004002 (Windows Update encountered and unknown error).

I've run the System Update Readiness Test and have attached the Checksur log. I have attempted to run SFC scannow and receive the message:

Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.

I've also attached the CBS.zip.

Hoping you can help!

The CheckSUR log is normal for a system with IE10 installed.
I can't see any significant errors in the CBS.log file either. - which is odd if you ran SFC /SCANNOW

Are these two updates listed in Installed Updates?
If so, uninstall both, then reboot, and try installing them again.

Either way, try running SFC from the Repair Environment...

Reboot the computer, and tap the F8 key until you get the advanced boot menu up - one option should be 'Repair your computer'. Pick that one.

Log into your normal account.
You'll get a set of options - pick the Command Prompt one.
At the command prompt, type DIR C:\
- if we're lucky this will bring up a listing of your normal C: drive contents, including the Program Files folder(s) and the Windows folder.
If not, try D:\ or E:\ (etc. until you get the right letter)
then type the following command

sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=<drive>:\ /OFFWINDIR=<drive>:\Windows

where <drive> is the letter you found above.
(example - sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=P:\ /OFFWINDIR=P:\Windows)

Wait for the command to complete. (make a note of the response!).

Once it has, type EXIT and the pick the option to reboot.

Post the new CBS.log file

Thanks.
Ive attached a screenshot of the installed update list. Seems like these two KB's attempt to reinstall every day. Nearly every time i shut down the PC, I can see the Yellow Update shield notifying me that updates will be installed when i shut down. The install/update status goes blank while update 1 is being installed and then the PC shuts down.

Hmmm - still no SFC data.

Did you see what the result of the scan was before you rebooted?

Please upload the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file and I'll see if that gives me some inspiration.

That is all identical to my installation - apart from the timestamps, of course.
The only other thing I can think of that may give that error (file not found in registry) is permissions.

Please open Regedit and navigate to the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\WUClient-SelfUpdate-ActiveX~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~7.6.7600.256
entry and right-click on it - select Permissions.

What does it show as permissions for each user there?

Not sure if related or not but other peculiar issues I'm having:

1) iTunes does not automatically start when i plug in my iPhone or iPad2
2) At times, iTunes will not open at all without a reboot
3) A couple of Outlook 2010 add-ins don't work properly
4) Recently, Flash in Firefox occassionally crashes

It's OH so tempting to blame everything on iTunes - it really is rather badly coded, as I understand it (which is why it gets updated every month). :)

it MAY be worth uninstalling it, and seeing if that affects anything.

Noel,
No help. I uninstalled all of the Apple products (iTunes, Quicktime, Apple Mobile, etc, etc) and then reinstalled iTunes. Windows 7 still wants to install the same KB2676521 and KB2813170.

In this sequence, when I check the list of installed Windows Updates, I initially get this:Untitled.png

When I manually ask to do a Windows Update, I get this:Untitled1.png

Then, when I again check the list of installed Windows Updates, I get this: Untitled2.png

Wondering if it isnt time to reinstall Windows 7 Home Premium or upgrade to a different version on Windows 7?

Thanks for your help and insight.

Noel,
Really not sure if this is relevant but did some searching on another forum. They suggested using Event Viewer. Found the following setup errors within the Windows log screen. Appears my problems started back around June 25.
