Hallo,

I'm planning on installing windows 8 on my drive.

when I installed windows 7 it formatted my drive and I'm afraid it will happen again.

I tried to partition the drive as an external on laptop running windows 7 but does not give me the option.

what can I do to ensure my drive is not formatted or what else can I try to partition the drive.

please help.

Windows 8 has an option to keep all of your files implemented in the installation so I wouldn't worry. It also gives you the option to format your drive/files.

These are the options for the Windows 8 installation even if it says something else. I am certain on this.

That's a different issue that you should make a separate thread on. I cannot help you with this one.

Uninstall GRUB from the partition where you had it. If it continues to cause problems then you'll need to back up your data, wipe the HD of boot code with Diskpart Clean Command and do the superior Clean Install - Windows 8.

It would help if you'd tell us if you want to keep Win7 to install Win8 in a Dual Boot Installation - Windows 8 and Windows 7, upgrade Win7 to Win8, or Clean Install.

The correct way to Clean install an OS is always to boot the installer and use Drive Options to delete all partitions, then create new as you wish - unless you want to do an Upgrade which you also don't bother to say.

drive crashed not available grub4dos error activated sum thing like _ _ (0.1) now it keeps saying no bootable device found

Sounds like you have a Linux activated boot loader.

there were a previous post on grub4dos command like makeactive --(0,1) plus 2 other commands I cant find these posts after registering

even if I can just boot into windows 7 again I can take it from there

I understand and apologise the original thread stated that I wanted to install windows 8 without formatting my drive

then was answered that windows 8 gives me options on what I want to do

windows 7 is supposedly to give the same options but didn't and I lost 1,5 terabyte of data

the first thread also stated advise on how to partition the drive witch no one replied to

some of the answers lead to upgrade witch were not available due to the grub4dos error

I don't have a windows 7 disc thus meaning I had to find other means but were able to create a recovery disc on laptop

now my pc starts up but I have to start explorer manually and cant access my computer

Which OS do you want to install now?

If Win7, which version do you own a license for? We can provide the installer if you own a license.

Data should always be backed up in case of HD failure at any time. Do you have a way to back up your data so you can Clean Install whichever OS it is that you actually want installed?

If not we can help you move your data to a safe partition which if untouched during install should preserve it, but this is not guaranteed. However it is safer than running an Upgrade install which overwrites C when all of your data is left on C.

Let us know what you want to do and we will work with you to get it done. Answer every question completely so we can move on.

I'm running windows 7 ultimate 32bit (no licence)

I wanted to install windows 8 (no licence) but don't want to lose my drive

I am running with 2TB drive halfway full and no where to back up

if I can partition the hard drive I can win but windows 7 does not allow me to

Label your partitions so that you know where things are going to be installed..

Drive letters are irrelevant as each OS will see itself as C:

Whereas [volume windows 7] [volume windows 8] is quite clear to see..

Post up a screenshot of your http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/274797-disk-management-post-screen-capture-image.html.

Tell us what's installed where and how you'd like to partition your HD, and we will give you the steps to do it. It would be better to back up your data externally, or start with a new HDD or SSD for the OS install so your 1tb can remain data storage. However if necessary we will walk you through partioning the drive so your files are kept in separate storage untouched during install.

You still have not made it clear if you want to keep Win7 or replace it with Win8.
