I have just installed a new AMD Phenom x4 840 onto my pc, but the computer does not recognize the model of the cpu but it functions. Some software ex. HWM, CPUID are able to detect 840 while windows can not. When i checked the processor under system, it reads AMD Processor model unknown 3.2GHz. Any idea? Many thanks.

*Note: Im running 840 (Socket AM3) on a socket AM2+ motherboard. I doubt if theres any compatible issues tho, since some software are able to identify the cpu.

Have you tried updating the BIOS on the motherboard, or rather, are you even able to?

OEM motherboard made by whoever (Asus, ECS, etc) for Acer, using an Acer custom bios. Unless Acer has a bios update for your particular model of computer or if you can find another model with the identical motherboard if yours doesn't, the CPU will likely be recognized properly.

Also means that with it being an OEM board made for Acer, you will get zero support from whichever of the motherboard manufacturer's made it.

If all four cores are detected and used by Windows as well as the clock speed, then I would be inclined to just leave it alone.

If you do decide to go for another motherboard look for one with the new AM3+ socket on it, as it will support that x4 840 and the new Bulldozer/AM3+ CPU's when they come out. Also means you would have to by DDR3 ram, but that part of it shouldn't be too bad seing as you can get 4 GB for around $30.00 or less. It would also leave you with an easy swap and drop upgrade to Bulldozer after they come out if you want to.

Thanks Stormy, I do intend to leave it alone and upgrade to an AM3+ board soon in the future. Since I did not find it a good idea to replace the board with another AM2+ board due to the price of DDR2 ram. Thanks again and have a great day!
