Latest Internet Explorer 9 Release

Back on IE8 now :D

1 - ok
2 - I did enable easy enough but functionaility is reduced from IE8.
3 - :(
4 - poor design then.
5 - I dont use the favourites bar.
6 - is a matter of opinion, font smoothing is either love it or hate it and enough people hate it believe me, I found a few sites full of people moaning about it very easily with google.

Seems to me MS's weakness has come out here and its the old recurring problem of removing choice from the user, they decide for me if I should use font smoothing or have toolbars in fixed position's, remove functions from status bar. I then decide I dont want to downgrade my browser (IE9 feels like a downgrade from IE8).

I also didnt mention before that I dont like how they applied windows skinning to the tabs bar, my colour scheme is great as long as its not mixed with text, so the tabs bar on my windows theme looks quite bad, but on IE8's colour scheme is good.

When the day comes IE8 is EOL then I will stop using IE except when absolutely needed, as I do also use firefox anyway with firefox been my default browser now.

I can't seem to break the muscle memory of hitting 'enter' after typing in a URL, and end up going to Bing search. Is there a way to change that so 'enter' just takes me there ? Using Shift+Enter just seems so unnatural.

Yes, IE6 was the last version where you could move GUI elements around freely. Firefox is really the way to go if you want to customize/personalize the GUI. Chrome is actually the worst in this regard. I don't understand how so many people don't care about this.

If you type in a proper URL then you should be taken to the webpage, not bing.

not too surprising as google are in the "not give user choice" mind given by recent changes on youtube.

The critical things that made me go back to IE 8 were the status bar situation and the font smoothing, I likely would have put up with the rest on my list.

My status bar on IE8 shows me a blocked cookie icon if any were blocked on that page, I can then double click it to choose which to allow for future visits, my simple adblock icon which is used to also control simple adblock (no way via menus), whether IE is in protected moe or not and whilst page loading a progress bar. The only thing left in the IE9 status bar is the page zoom level.

Just installed IE 9 RC on my machine. I'm ditching Chrome immediately on this machine as IE 9 performs faster and has a UI that is more pleasing to my eye. The one feature I also prefer that Chrome doesn't have is the tab groups (colored tabs). I often will open a bunch of tabs with articles I will read later and like to sort them by general categories with the colored tabs.

Performance so far is superb. Can't wait for the final release of IE 9. If it continues like this, I think Microsoft has a winner on its hands.

I thin the idea is to keep it lean - it's a marvellous piece of work..

maybe it'll appear as an add-in at some point.. (?)

hope so, 'cos I like it fast and responsive - not checking and re-checking stuff all the time..:geek:

I decided I would overlook the problems I am having with only the Gmail page. I'll just have to keep my email client open all the time, which is probably better because I'll then have the offline capability. I just like IE9 a lot. I find it's quite streamlined. I also found enabling the tab bar to be very helpful and convenient. What I am surprised at is the speed - I find no difference between it and the latest stable build of Chrome. Btw, on someone's recommendation on another forum, I installed Simple Ad block (in addition to adding a couple of tracking lists). While not as good as the Chrome plug-in, it works relatively well.

One other thing I noted: If the tab bar is enabled, then it makes no sense to have that vacant strip alongside the "minimize, maximize..." buttons (top right corner). The Back and Forward buttons could be reduced slightly in size and pushed up - leaving a space of maybe 2-3 pixels free as a border. The search box could be push up accordingly - can keep a gap between it and the "minimize, maximize..." buttons (the search box can be resizeable - it is an option but not a necessity). Correspondingly the tab bar would move up too and a little more screen estate could be gained.

This is probably an odd question to ask - but is there a place from where I could download and install the Beta version (not the RC)? I want to uninstall the RC, re-install the Beta and then install the RC over it. I actually uninstalled the Beta and then installed the RC, which may be the reason I have the gmail problem (the problem did not exist in the Beta). So, any links to the Beta version of IE9 would be most helpful. Thanks

Thanks. This is very helpful. I'll try and see if this fixes the problem.
Update1: Downloaded and installed IE9Beta and guess what Gmail works perfectly. So, I am going to install IE9 RC over this without uninstalling the Beta.
Update 2: Well I installed the RC over the Beta and the problem with Gmail's pages remain!!!! I think this is a problem with the RC!!!! But I can live with it - for the moment, that is!!!!

Returned to IE8 this AM with a sigh of relief. IE9 was great but seemed like an overtuned engine at times, a bit jumpy and high strung? Also it was really really slow on the first load but seemed fast after that. My big bug was the desktop refresh after IE9 exit. This probably happened 90% of the time. Annoying! I kinda wonder if this thing is a touch gooey in the center yet? Any way IE8 came back with no problems and is running perfectly as always........

I un-installed the beta before installing the RC. No problems that I know of yet. My only gripe is you still can't set the 64 Bit version as the default browser. :(

I too was suprised by this. Why develop a 64bit browser and not be able to set it as default.

Actually, you can use the 64-bit version as if it is default. First delete the IE icon on the task bar. The drag and drop the IE 64-bit icon from the start menu (you will probably have to dig into "All programs") to the task bar.

This only makes it default by user choice and doesnt make all programs open in 64bit mode
