2 gig = ok 4 gig = BSOD

We're off to a good start,

This is important, run this if you haven't yet.

A question on the debugging steps.
How did you uninstall AVG?
Need to be sure all traces are gone.
Run this AVG Remover Tool, if you haven't already.

Let me know how it's going...

Edit:
Just found some information from your first thread on this problem.

BSOD Windows 7 while playing games!

Thorn8369's comment two posts below your last one can be looked at after we rule out the RAM slots faults.

After the build in Nov'09, did you set the RAM timings and voltages or just running the defaults?

Did you update the BIOS and/or chipset drivers when you finished the build? Did you let win7 find them or load from the Asus CD?

Let's not start skipping around just yet, this info will help with the trouble shooting order.

The first thing we need to rule out is RAM slot faults.

Defaults

Bios is upto date, windows 7 drivers not off disk.

I will be doing the tests over the next few days will keep you posted.

Mike,

Here is something you need to check.

In your motherboard manual in section 1.7.2 Memory configurations

- This motherboard does not support DIMMs made up of 256 megabits (Mb) chips or less.

From the Crucial website, the only DDR3 PC3-8500/DDR3-1066, 4GB kit (2GBx2) that I found there:

4GB kit (2GBx2)
Part #: CT2KIT25664BA1067 • DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.5V • 256Meg x 64 • more details

4GB kit (2GBx2)
Part #: CT2KIT25672BA1067 • DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.5V • 256Meg x 72 • more details

4GB kit (2GBx2)
Part #: CT2KIT25672BB1067S • DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Single Ranked • Registered • ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.5V • 256Meg x 72 • more details

Check your memory specs, if they are 256 meg chips then your motherboard doesn't support that RAM.

If you can't find the info in your documentation then search the part number on Crucials website.

Let me know if this is the issue.

Please not this lol !!!!

if this is the case will the north bridge tweak to effect this particular problem?

Many Thanks

That's good news about the RAM sockets. Rules out the motherboard problem and RMA.

Too bad about the RAM.
Check the return policy with your supplier. Best thing to do is return the RAM and get some with the correct specs for your motherboard.

After a quick check at Crucial's website, they only came up with one possible RAM for your motherboard. 1X4GB with 512 mb chips, it's twice the price per GB as the 2GB sticks, and would run in single channel mode - not good.
Try another brand, Corsair, J.Skill, Patriot, OCZ, are all good brands. Get DDR3-1600 with 8 timings, they're about the same price as lower timings and this is the max your motherboard recommends.

Don't think it will ever work properly, you can try tweaking the voltage and see if it helps. But it will most likely be running in single channel mode, like you have been since you first put this RAM in your system.

With the correct RAM you will get full functioning DDR3 Dual channel. Which will have definite performance advantages, which is the ultimate goal.

Go to the your memory assessment speed thread and run the memory assessment. Instructions are on the first post.

You should be above 10,000 MB/s, with full functioning 4GB DDR3 Dual channel you should be at least 16,000 MB/s.
For example my 8GB DDR3-1600 Dual channel runs at 19,424 MB/s (No OC'ing).

Would also recommend to install the 64bit win7, to get use of all the 4GB you have, or will have, installed. Also will have the option to increase RAM later if you decide to.
With 32bit win7 and 4GB RAM you will be able to use from 3.2 - 3.5 GB of the 4GB RAM, depending on your graphics card and other components using address space.
It's actually not a hugh amount, and might not be noticeable in everyday usage.

Let me know what you decide and how everything works out.
Post the memory assessment if you run it.

Sorry about the bad news.

Is it possible that the install did not take? Please check \windows\system32\drivers for asio.sys

If you cannot locate it there, please perform all-out search via WHERE command -

I've looked at the Corsair site and can't find any chip size info, I have that exact RAM (4X2GB) in my system. Different MOBO so can't say if it will work.

Try the Corsair Tech Support site.

Or call them at Toll Free: +1 888-222-4346.

Let me know how it's going.

EDIT: 11 May

I got a response from Corsair Tech support.

"For that boards we would recommend one of our 1333MHz kits as 1600MHz is considered an overclock and may not run reliably."

I have asked for clarification on the 256 Mb chip issue.

Will see if they reply.

Edit:

From RAM GUY
Corsair Product Guru

"I would recommend the TW3X4G1333C9 kit for your motherboard."

Found these specs for TW3X4G1333C9:
Density: 4GB (2x2GB Module)
Speed: 1333MHz
Timing: 9-9-9-24
Type: DDR3
Format: DIMM
Pin Out: 240 Pin
Voltage: 1.5V
Warranty: Limited Lifetime

I would call Corsair and get someone to confirm, just to be sure.

Hi all again

1st of all thanks for the help so far.

I have now bought a Kit of GEIL ram see link:

Play.com (UK) - Free Delivery - Computing

this is listed in the mobo manual as being compatble BUT I am still getting BSOD's

Here is the lastes 2 dump files.

If it make any difference it BSOD when I refreshed the Windows Experience Index.

I am (and so is my mate who helpfully bought this ram for me what a legend!) getting really sick of this and also very frustrated and would love to see the back of this annoying issue!

Please help if you can...

Mike

Sorry to hear your still having the BSOD.

The new RAM looks good, and the win7 64 bit.

Is everything the same as before, let us know if there're any differences.

Still no problem with 2GB installed?

Did you try installing the 2X2GB sticks in the black sockets and then in the orange sockets?

Asus recommends installing them in the orange sockets when using 2 sticks.

Did you run Memtest86 on the new RAM?

Let's look at the RAM settings, post a snip of the 'Memory' and 'SPD' tabs from CPUZ, The latest version is CPU-Z 1.54,(< click to go to the CPUZ site).
This one is 64bit: Download version 1.54 64-bit (.zip, no install, english).

Run the Memory Assessment tool from the What's your memory assessment speed? thread, before you make any changes.
Post the results here so we can use it for comparison after any changes.
The instructions are on the first post.

If your not familiar with the functions of the BIOS read section '2.4 Ai Tweaker menu' in your motherboard manual.

Go to your BIOS and check all the RAM settings, post back the results.

In your BIOS select the 'Ai Tweaker' tab, is everything set to 'Auto'?

What are the Settings in:
'Ai Overclock Tuner' (options are manual, auto and X.M.P.),
'FSB Strap to North Bridge' (options are auto, 200MHz, 266MHz, 333MHz, 400MHz)
'DRAM Frequency' (options are auto, DDR3-800MHz, DDR3-1066MHz, DDR3-1600MHz, DDR3-1800MHz),
'DRAM Timing Control' (options are auto, manual)
'NB voltage' (options are auto, 1.10V, 1.15V, 1.20V, 1.25V)
'Memory Over Voltage' (options are Auto, the values range from 1.50V to 2.205V with 0.015V intervals)

Does your new RAM have X.M.P.?
Didn't see anything on their website that indicates it does.

If your settings are at default, it's highly likely that they are not correct. Asus uses 'safe' settings to ensure that nothing will be damaged, as they don't know what RAM will be installed.

Standard disclaimer:
Changing settings in BIOS has inherent risks, the wrong settings can cause damage to the hardware.
If your not sure about the settings you want to change, seek advice or at minimum research your options, read the motherboard manual.

I had to reset my RAM settings in BIOS after RAM installation, the settings were not correct for my RAM.

Sorry to hear your still having the BSOD.

The new RAM looks good, and the win7 64 bit.

Is everything the same as before, let us know if there're any differences.

Yes just new Ram everything else (bar 64bit o/s) is the same.

Still no problem with 2GB installed?

No, no issues with 2gig.

Did you try installing the 2X2GB sticks in the black sockets and then in the orange sockets?

It is now! was in black changed put in 4 gig and pooooffff BSOD :( so no difference there...

Asus recommends installing them in the orange sockets when using 2 sticks.

Done

Did you run Memtest86 on the new RAM?

Yes no errors now on 4gig (used to get them on the old ram with 4 gig)

No problem, we'll take it slow.

Overclocking both RAM and CPU is a trial and error procedure, you need to read up on the MOBO manual, other overclocking sites and get a general idea of how this works.

You make small adjustments, and check for stability.
That means, see how it runs, if no BSOD your good and can go more if desired. If you go a little too far and get a BSOD, then you back off.

Write down all the setting in BIOS Ai Tweaker section, or take pictures.
IF nothing is stable (worst case scenario) then you can set everything back to how it is now.

Your Memory Assessment is a little low, for 1X2GB it's ok.

Go to the 'Ai Tweaker' tab, move down to the 'NB voltage' and click enter, hopefully it will tell you what the actual voltage is. It should be in auto now, just leave it there and let me know what the voltage is, if it is listed.

Your MOBO is reported to need a small bump for the North Bridge, depending on the current voltage, if listed, we'll go from there.

Let me know what the voltage is, this may be all that is required, if luck is with us.

Ok cool,

Right I have looked and its set to 1.10v

Its Max Voltage is 1.25v

Incruments of 0.05v at a time.

When you ask me to up it do you want me to put both strips back in or just leave it as is (1 x 2gig atm)

Thanks so much

Mike

Just leave 1X2GB in for now, set the NB voltage to 1.15V, then you need to stress the system, run a couple of passes of Memtest86, play the most resource demanding game for an hour.

If everything is running smooth, put the other 2GBs in (lets use the orange sockets), do what you normally do when it blue screens. If it seems ok, then run Memtest86, play a game.

If everything passes, run the Memory Assessment and post the results.

Let me know if it's exactly the same as before, a little better...

Looks like your RAM has XMP, lower right side in the SPD tab of CPUZ, XMP-1600.

Hi Dave,

Right I think we maybe be getting somewhere!!!

I have had 4gig's in now for nearly 3hrs with the 0.05v increase in the nbridge and no BSODS!!! **Touch Wood**

I have also tried to Use X.M.P Profile #1 but this doesnt let the system P.O.S.T when I selected this. Also I have noticed that currently the Ram is running at 1333Mhz

The ram is sold as 1600Mhz but when selecting this option in Bios again the pc fails to P.O.S.T?

Odd?

Here are the requested images below.

Any thoughts on the above, also if it makes any difference I tried the above settings with and without the increase of 0.05v on nbridge both resulted in the pc not P.O.S.Ting.

But at least I seem to have a stable rig with 4gig now........ so far anyway.

That's good news.

The Memory Assessment is still low, should be double that score. At least your getting Dual channel.

Let's try a bump on the NB Voltage, move it up to 1.20V.
Run 4GB at the same 1333 MHz settings to check for stability. Run Memtest86 and play a game.

If it's stable, try your XMP profile (XMP-1600) again.
If it POSTs, let it run for a little while, if stable, run Memtest86 and play a game.
If stable post the new Memory Assessment results.

If it's not stable, check the (with XMP profile selected) memory voltages and timings in BIOS and let me know what they are running at.

I couldn't get the XMP profile to run well on my board, ended up running the settings manually.

Let's try the XMP profile first.

Hi Dave,

With the increase in another 0.05volts all is ok.

Tried with XMP again, this time system is P.O.S.Ting but hangs during POST and or Boot.

So I have check the voltages and timing as requested they are as follows:-

1600mhz-8-8-8-28-1.90v

I have looked at the Manual option and just got lost in the option and decided to wait for your next bit of advise instead!

Feeling a little more "at home" in the more deeper darker areas of BIOS now (thank you):D still a long way to go before I understand it all I think.....

Cheers Mike

Glad your getting more comfortable with the BIOS, just remember to be careful while your in there.

This is definitely, better safe than sorry territory.

Did you check the voltages and timings in:

DRAM Timing Control
And
Memory Over Voltage

If you check it in Ai Overclock Tuner it will tell you what it's suppose to be.

IF the above is the same info, let's set it to the XMP specs manually.

Be sure to note all the settings before you change them. If it's not stable you will need to set them all back to the original settings.
Be careful not to mix the timings and voltages, 1333MHz and timings at 1.9v might cause damage.
Be sure to return the voltage to 1.5v if you need to return to the last stable settings.

Leave the NB Voltage at 1.20V.

Change your settings to:

FSB strap to North Bridge [auto] - change it to [400MHz]

DRAM Frequency [auto] - change it to [DDR3-1600MHz]

DRAM Timing control [auto] - change to [manual] and then change first 4 numbers to:
[8]
[8]
[8]
[28]

Memory Over Voltage [auto] - change to 1.9v, if the system is not stable, bump to 1.95v.

If it won't POST, Return settings to last stable settings and we'll work it up slower.

If it is stable, run Memtest86, play a game, if still stable, run and post the new Memory Assessment results.
