SSD installation?

Here's the instructions to avoid System Reserved if you want to go that route. Ask questions before you start if you intend to do this:

Disconnect all hard drives other than the drive that will receive Windows.

Disconnect any external devices. All you need are monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

Boot from the Windows 7 installation disc.

Hit Shift F10 at the first screen where you are asked to choose a language.

A command prompt will appear. Type diskpart at that prompt.

Type in the following commands one by one, followed by the Enter key to create a partition (text in parentheses are comments only):

list disk (to show the ID number of the hard disk to partition, normally Disk 0)

select disk 0 (change 0 to another number if applicable)

clean (this wipes the drive of anything on it; not needed on a brand new drive)

create partition primary (this will create one primary partition covering the entire drive; if you instead want to create a primary partition of 80 GB, add “size=80000” after the word “primary”)

select partition 1 (this selects the partition you just made)

active (this marks that partition active)

format fs=ntfs quick (this formats that partition)

exit (this quits the diskpart program)

exit (this closes the command prompt window)

Continue Windows 7 installation as usual. Remember to highlight and select the partition just created when you come to the partition screen asking you "where do you want to install Windows?”.

How can one NOT install, W7 updates to upgrade to W10?

Change update settings > Display before downloading and installing?

I think people are making a bit too much of this issue because you'd have to explicitly assent to at least one EULA before a new OS would ever be installed.

Obviously, pay attention to what Windows Updates are offered. Don't blindly say yes.

A few of them are related to a possible future update to 10---examining your PC, seeing if it's 10 capable, etc. You can hide those updates if they are offered, but some people report that have a way of being re-offered.

I think this is a list of the updates that some are worried about.

You are correct, watching a few Youtubes have confused me.

One last question.

Do I need to set page file size, what services to be disabled and what in regedit > HKLM > Contolset be set at zero?

Thanks.

I wouldn't disable any Microsoft services. Where did you hear that?

I would keep an eye on non-Microsoft services as a general maintenance item, but that has nothing to do with SSDs.

I have no idea what you are referring to with that regedit. Where did you hear that?

I wouldn't adjust the page file size unless you are really squeezed for space on the SSD. You could set it to something like 1000 mb minimum and 2000 mb maximum, but there's no need to get involved with that if you have plenty of space.

Thanks for clarifying the doubts created by Youtube links on how to install, configure and optimize SSDs.

Install them, install Windows, get anti-virus running; update Windows, and then run benchmarks on both SSDs and post the results to confirm the SSDs are performing within specs.

Here's a couple of examples from my own SSDs.

See that "1024 K OK" in the upper left? That indicates proper alignment--that number must be evenly divisible by 4.

SSDs get their kick from the access time number, which is many many times faster than HDDs.

You'll note that the Crucial has twice the overall score of the Intel. I can't tell the difference between them.

One more question from the link you posted;

Open an elevated command prompt and run

fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify

the response will be one of the below and will tell you.

DisableDeleteNotify = 1 (Windows TRIM commands are disabled)
DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Windows TRIM commands are enabled)

It should be zero, (if not than).........correct?

Thanks.

Hi,
You know I never did verify my ssd's speed :/
Proof is in seeing the speed in real time not in a benchmark "to me" which is WOW Faster compared to a hdd :D
That's good enough in my book I'm sure if this is your first ssd you'll be shocked as I was in the sheer speed pick up in startup/ boot/.....

The only other thing I did check and or compare is my WEI score increase :)

Again a smart practical reply from a genius.

If supposedly Trim is 0 not disabled how can it be enabled?

How do you keep the update settings on W7, (as shown in the 2 screen captures)?

Thanks again.

Hi,
Not quite sure but I believe the ending of the command (disabledeletenotify) is the key word -0- is verifying no value has been selected
But that is out of my pay scale there possibly someone might explain the command a bit better :)

Hi,
On your lower screen shot that is almost how mine settings have always been set,
Are you saying your setting do not stick ?

I usually uncheck let all users install updates but the others are the same as you show.

Hi,

Just wanted to confirm, I have settings as on the lower screenshot too.

I am single and no one touches my computers so left it checked......never thought.

Settings do stick.

Do you install all W7 updates, Important Recommended and Optional too?

I see a usb device, when clicked shows my lap, properties > troubleshooting > Base System device not installed........is it a Dell driver?

Thanks.

Hi,
Oh shoot I also have the box Uncheck to Give me recommended updates the same as Important ones,
That way all Recommended updates are listed in the Optional section not in the Important section,
Most recommended updates should be reviewed by the individual to see if they apply to their environment
Same goes for Optional updates,

I'm not sure what you mean on the last part could you explain a bit more ?

You mean to say Recommended Updates box should be unchecked?

I meant see an icon of a USB device near the clock rt lower corner, when clicked displayed my lap with a yellow icon. Rt click properties troubleshooting displayed missing Base Device Drivers.
